Linking operational flash flood forecasting & warning systems to flood management issues
Office/Department: Climate and Water Department
Division/Unit: Hydrological Forecasting and Water Resources
Supervisor: Chief, Hydrological Forecasting and Water Resource Division
Duties:
1. Assist in formulating guidance material for flood management in a multi hazard environment.
2. Contribute to the synthesis of existing operational flash flood guidance systems and flood management related tools produced by the Associated Programme on Flood Management (www.apfm.info).
3. Assist in linking activities of the International Flood Initiative (IFI) to flood forecasting and warning activities of WMO.
4. Assist in the development and implementation of capacity building activities, conducting workshops, and provision of technical assistance to National Meteorological and Hydrological Services.
5. Assist in co-ordination and liaison with other organizations active in the field of flood forecasting and water resources management, in particular with Support Base Partners in the framework of the IFM HelpDesk, and assist in enriching the IFM HelpDesk by adding components and content;
Qualifications:
Education
Graduate of a recognized university or technical institute with an initial degree in hydrology, civil engineering, water resources management, physical geography or environmental studies or a related field with an orientation to applied hydrology, flood forecasting and river basin management. Post-graduate qualifications in the fields of hydrology and/or water resources management would be an advantage.
Experience
Two to three years of experience in water resources management and/or disaster risk management is an advantage. Work experience in developing countries is an advantage. Experience in research and application-oriented practical work in flood/integrated water resources management is an advantage.
Other requirements
Ability to effectively and efficiently work with Microsoft Office applications. Good communication skills. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to foster team spirit. Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Content Management Systems (CMS) is an advantage.
Language skills
Excellent knowledge of English (spoken and written). Knowledge of other official languages of the WMO Secretariat is an advantage. (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.)
