Milwaukee County trails council

1.  Possible Trail Designations on MMSD “Service Roads”, MMSD projects and river clearing responsibility

q  Concerns about the deadfalls: Who’s responsible for clearing? MMSD will only clear is there is a possibility for structural damage or flooding.

q  A need to balance the habitat as well as allowing a pathway for people.

q  Beaver Dams are considered a nuisance by state law.

q  Can county crews take care of this?

q  Questions about proper equipment and safety?

2.  RR Corridor abandonment update

q  Angie made a motion to draft a letter of support from the council to acquire and develop the corridor. Supervisor Borkowski 2nd the motion.

q  Call Supervisor Joe Rice

q  Possible grants

3.  Trails Network Plan Review/update

q  Take a look at for any upgrades/updates

q  Major updates every 10 years

q  Add an addendum/appendix’s when there is a change or addition

q  Doing another map this year with existing funding. Questions about doing maps next year and whether or not these would be free.

4.  Oak Leaf Discovery Tour

q  Moving forward

q  Separate tour groups. Dennis Northey

5.  Snowmobile Event at Wil-o-Way

q  February 7th 10am-2pm Wil-O-Way

q  National Forest/Roadless Areas Initiative could limit bikes and snowmobiles.

q  Looking for a realistic way to get gas tax money to support bike trails.

q  Giving incentives to join snowmobile clubs. With that members will be given additional safety training.

6.  Greenfield/ WE Energies Corridor Plan

q  Western city limit to city of Milwaukee to St.Francis.

q  Currently still working on a bike/ped. Plan

q  Contact Sup. Pat Jursik-trail advocate for St.Francis @Cardinal Stritch

q  Sup. Borkowski motioned to draft a support plan/letter to Cardinal Stritch, Guy Smith 2nd

7.  Hank Aaron State Trail, Zoo Interchange and West Allis Bike/Ped Plan updates

q  Moving forward. Some survey work stalled by weather conditions. Construction 2010

q  Zoo interchange may use part of future trail as a staging site.

q  Began bike lanes in West Allis.

8.  MTB Trail Development

q  North of Hampton

q  Marty will get file to Dave

q  GPS of new areas needs to be done.

9.  Future of Crystal Ridge; MTB and BMX

q  John is still the tenant w/ a year-to-year lease.

q  Could Crystal Ridge be a back up in the 2016 Olympics?

10. Sweetwater Trust-Watershed Action Teams

q  MMSD took the lead on developing watershed action teams to manage rivers more effectively; water quality issues, storm water practices, access to rivers, restoration and possible future swimming sites.

q  Focus on KK to Menomonee (MMSD & many agencies)

q  Checking outfalls

11. Americorps 2008 recap/ Possible 2009 Projects

q  Fall teams collected many hours on trails/natural areas.

q  Hope for a team fall 2009

12. Bike Fed “Love Your Bike Party”

q  February 13 7pm-11pm Lake Front Brewery-Benefits BFW

13. Milwaukee River Work Group News

q  Protect Milwaukee River-70-80% is county land, (North Ave-Silver Spring)

q  Working on overlay zoning. Look at appropriate trails, building heights. protect bluffs and green space.

q  Public hearing is in 2 weeks

q  Flow back to Underwood Creek. Major concerns with erosion, Water quality, base flow

q  Milwaukee County is required to make repairs.
