Progress Every Day

Volume 4 Issue 49 1/16/08

MESSAGE FROM MR. M
Thanks to everyone for a great test administration yesterday. I’d particularly like to recognize Mr. Brookstein, for setting everything up to run smoothly, and Mr. Breen, for pitching in. I’d also like to recognize several teachers for bringing breakfast to their classes and for setting a wonderful tone for testing: Ms. Ogunbiyi, Ms. High, Ms. Munoz, Ms. Mahajan, Mr. Owens, and Mr. Zayas, Let’s do it again today!
While I know the ELA test is fully on our mind, we know we will not get the results for some time. Since we opened the BWA, we have discussed the importance of using many forms of assessment to measure student progress – not just standardized tests.
We have three major sources besides standardized tests with which to measure student progress: teacher grades, portfolios of student work, and interim assessment data from McGraw Hill.
I don’t have the newest grades yet (though see below for a big change in the due date for grades) and we will review the portfolios next week, I can share the latest interim assessment data with you.
ELA
So far in ELA we have taken two assessments. We took a “predictive” assessment in November, which covers all standards for a grade. Then we took a customized assessment in December, which covered the same material as our curriculum up to that point. Here is how we did in ELA (the numbers indicate the average percent of multiple choice questions students answered correctly):
