IV. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introductory language experience to develop an appreciation for conversing in a world language. It is designed to enable the students to practice speaking in the target language with an introduction to the grammatical structure of the language. The students will have a better understanding of the Italian culture, and be able to make connections with other content areas. This course has been designed with respect to and in compliance with the expectations set forth in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.
V. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of the course, the students should be able to:
· Understand written and spoken Italian according to the ACTFL guidelines at the Novice Low level.
· Recognize correct pronunciation of the target language.
· Identify correct word order in the target language.
· Write short paragraphs through guided questions and speak Italian on topics related to the Novice Low level.
· Recognize regular and irregular verbs in the present tense.
· Increase their knowledge of English through comparison with and experience in the target language.
· Appreciate the ability to communicate in another language.
· Identify geography and understand the culture of Italy.
· Compare and contrast the culture and lifestyle of the United States and Italy.
· Understand and appreciate the differences in cultures.
· Recognize familiar phrases in authentic materials using electronic information sources.
