A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor and loving memory of Officer James "Stumpy" Sticklen.

WHEREAS, James Philip Sticklen was born on May 1, 1952, the son of the late Jack Sticklen and Mary Bea Sticklen Bare; and

WHEREAS, James Sticklen had served with the Alexandria Police Department since 1992. For the past nine years, he was the School Resource Officer for the Campbell County School District, Bishop Brossart High School, and St. Mary Grade School. An officer of high distinction, he had received many awards and commendations, including the Chief Charles T. Donaldson 2006 Leadership Award, a letter of thanks from the Cold Spring Police Department for his role as a crisis negotiator in 2009, a Teacher of the Month Award from Campbell County Middle School, the School Resource Officer of the Year for Region 4, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Campbell County Day Treatment Program for his work with troubled students, a thank you letter from the local Walmart on behalf of the Character Counts Program, a Meritorious Medal of Conduct Award from the City of Alexandria, and a Certificate of Appreciation from the D.A.R.E. Program; and

WHEREAS, during his time as School Resource Office, Officer Sticklen went above and beyond the call of duty to build lasting relationships with children and their parents. A man of great character and compassion, he embodied the kindness and civic responsibility of the Alexandria Police Department and was a beloved role model to an entire generation of students; and

WHEREAS, Officer Sticklen was preceded in death by his brothers, Vince and Tom Sticklen; and his sister, Annie Sticklen. He is survived by his loving wife, Laurie Hollenkamp Sticklen; his children, Mary, Emily, and Andrew Sticklen; his siblings, Mindy Sticklen, Paul (Janet) Sticklen, Fred (Sherry) Sticklen, Margaret (Mike) Branam, Cathy (Tony) Cropper, and David (Penny) Sticklen; his sister-in-law, Sharon Sticklen; and his mother-in-law, Nancy Hollenkamp; and

WHEREAS, during a training exercise in Corbin, Kentucky, on March 4, 2011, Officer Sticklen collapsed. He died at the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin while emergency staff worked feverishly to save his life. Along with his family, his friends, his community, and the men and women of the police department he so bravely served, this Honorable Body stands in mourning for the loss of a man who exemplified selflessness and courage;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its most profound sense of sorrow and proffers its sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and community of Officer James "Stumpy" Sticklen.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor and loving memory of Officer James "Stumpy" Sticklen.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Laurie Hollenkamp Sticklen, 4309 Highway 10, Dover, Kentucky 41034.
