Science Fiction or Fantasy Book ReportDue Date______

Your next book report assignment is to choose a science fiction or fantasy novel that interests you, and one that you have NOT read before. While you are reading, think about how your novel could be retold through radio, film, or through a story board. Imagine the characters, setting and plot coming to life.

  • Complete the plot diagram given to you in class and take notes on the different stages of plot.
  • Once you have read the book and have taken notes, choose from one of the following two activities to demonstrate your understanding of the book.

Brochure – In this activity, you will create a brochure that includes the following:

  1. Cover and Title Page: Design a cover that is interesting, colorful and attractive. It needs to represent the book you've read. (this means you do not copy the cover) Include: name of book, author, publisher, date of publication, your name.
  2. Plot: create a timeline for the main character that includes TEN major events in the story that span from the beginning to the end of the story. Be sure to label each event.
  3. Characters: list and describe the _____main characters in your book. Include physical, personality, a symbol and life skill descriptions. Give a detailed explanation on what you found interesting about each character (2 paragraphs each).
  4. Biography: write a brief biography of the author. Include the time period in which the author wrote, major works, and subjects they like to write about. Include a quote from the author about his/her work or a quote from someone else about their work.
  5. Letter to the author: write a letter to the author giving reactions to this book. This should take up the entire page with appropriate letter format. Be sure it is not one giant paragraph. Along with discussing the story, explain what you liked or disliked about the author’s style of writing.
  6. Advertisement: design an interesting advertisement for the book you've read that will sell it to others. Make it colorful and organized. Include a quote from the book, eye-catching symbol or picture, and the title and author.

  1. Introduction:Begin your retelling by “setting the stage” or introducing the characters and setting to the audience/listener. Provide background from the exposition of the story.
  2. Rising Action: Choose a scene from the rising action to portray on film. Include an explanation of prior events in the novel and write a script for the event that includes dialogue. Act out the scene on film. Consider visual techniques, editing and sound effects. Be sure it is very clear to the audience that this is a scene from the rising action stage of your novel.
  3. Climax: Write a script for the climax and act out the climactic moment in the novel on film. Consider visual techniques, editing and sound effects. Be sure it is very clear to the audience that this is a scene from the climax stage of your novel.
  4. Falling Action: Choose a scene from the falling action to portray on film. Include an explanation of prior events in the novel and write a script for the event that includes dialogue. Act out the scene on film. Consider visual techniques, editing and sound effects. Be sure it is very clear to the audience that this is a scene from the falling action stage of your novel.
