Social Studies Assignment #2 (Unit 2)

Select one First Nation or Inuit community or group to research from the list below. Use this question to focus your research. How did European settlement affect the traditional economy in the area? Your report must include information on

Some sample questions to research:

The Traditional Economy—Where did the people live? What resources were important in the area? What kinds of tools did people use? What are some interesting details about this way of lie—interconnectedness with the land (food, shelter, clothing)? What were the beliefs that went along with using natural resources?
Why European Settlers Came to the Area—When did they come? Where did they come from? Where did they settle? What resources were they most interested in? How did they go about getting or using the resources? What are some interesting details about their way of life—food, shelter, clothing?
How European Settlement Affected the Traditional Economy—Why did the Europeans come in contact with the First Nation or Inuit group? Did they trade or work together in some way? What were the changes that happened to the land or natural resources that affected the traditional economy? What else affected the traditional economy?

Doing the Project: Steps to Take

1.  Choose First Nation or Inuit community to research.

2.  Read over the types of questions and headings you are to use in your report. Also, read over the rubric used for marking.

3.  Use the RSS: 15 sheet (organizer) to help take notes while you research on the internet or texts from the library. You will get one copy of this sheet but you can copy the headings onto your own looseleaf when you are taking notes from other sites or texts.

4.  As a way to check reliability and accuracy of the information you receive, you should use at least two sources (three is preferred) for this project.

5.  Write a report of at least 5 paragraphs:

  1. Paragraph 1: Introduction
  2. Paragraph 2: Traditional Economy
  3. Paragraph 3: Why European Settlers Came to the Region
  4. Paragraph 4: How European Settlement Affected the Traditional Economy
  5. Paragraph 5: Conclusion

6.  Assignment Due Date: October 25…You will have at least two sessions in the computer lab and time equivalent to two class periods to work on this assignment in the classroom.
