Job Purpose
To provide specialist advice and guidance on all matters relating to health, safety and environmental management in order to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and promotion of a positive proactive culture.
Key Responsibilities
  • To provide specialist advice to all areas of the College on all aspects of health, safety, and environmental management.
  • To communicate to all areas of the College their health, safety and environmental management responsibilities, including the promotion of a positive, pro-active culture.
  • To assist the Environmental Compliance Manager in the development, implementation, monitoring and ongoing review of the Derby College Group health and safety and environmental management strategies, policies, procedures and guidance.
  • To carry out, in liaison with appropriate staff, regular inspections of all areas of the College.
  • To keep professionally up-to-date on all aspects of health, safety and environmental management legislation, best practice, recommendations and national guidance, and advise the College accordingly.
  • To analyse accident/incident/near miss data/statistics in order to establish trends or recurrent events, advising the appropriate persons of recommended action(s) to reduce the likelihood/frequency of future incidents.
  • To investigate, where necessary, accidents/incidents/near misses in conjunction with relevant managers/agencies, produce reports and action plans for any health, safety and environmental management issues as appropriate.
  • In conjunction with the Environmental Compliance Manager promote and facilitate the production of risk assessments in all areas following the delivery of appropriate, training, advice and guidance.
  • In conjunction with the Environmental Compliance Manager plan, prepare, conduct and evaluate audits and surveys across the College in connection with health, safety and environmental management, in order to inform management of the risk profile. When non-compliance is identified consult with managers, senior managers and the Governing Body providing reports and recommending actions, with a view to reducing areas of risk.
  • To collate, compile and present reports to managers, senior managers, the Governing Body and other parties external to the College in all aspects of health, safety and environmental management.
  • To attend meetings commensurate with the post.
  • To design, implement, deliver and evaluate health, safety and environmental management training to meet the requirements of the College, in conjunction with all relevant parties.
  • To assist with the development and implementation of clear health and safety policies and procedures for all workbased learning, in liaison with the Environmental Compliance Manager, and curriculum/vocational staff, including apprenticeships
  • To develop and implement a compliance monitoring and evaluation process and procedure for work placements, in liaison with the Environmental Compliance Manager.
  • To liaise with the College’s insurers to ensure that any claims received are dealt with in line with timescales set.
  • To prioritise workload to meet requirements of external audit.
  • To assist with the implementation of action points arising from an audit.
  • To provide a professional customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • To ensure that quality standards are set, monitored and reviewed within the section.
  • To demonstrate flexibility in responding to changing demands in personal, sectional or the College’s workload.

  • To undertake risk assessments for any new activity and to ensure risk assessment checks are carried out for any ongoing activity.
  • To carry out any other reasonable duties within the overall function, commensurate with the grading and level of responsibility of the job.
  • To take reasonable care of your own health, safety and welfare and that of any other person who may be affected by your actions or omissions whilst at work. You are also required to co-operate with the College to enable it to fulfil its legal obligations. Appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision will be provided to enable you to perform your duties in a manner that is deemed safe and without risk to health.

Qualifications
Essentials
  • NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety & Health or equivalent
  • Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health
  • Diploma in Environmental Management or equivalent
  • Level 2 maths & English

  • Qualification in risk management
  • IEMA Internal EMA Auditing Certificate
  • Educated to first degree level or equivalent
  • Teaching qualification
