National Certificate in Agriculture (Stockmanship) (Level 3)

Level / 3
Credits / 50

Purpose

This qualification is for people with some experience in the agriculture industry. On completion of this qualification people will be able to work under little or no supervision as a stockman.

This qualification recognises the specialised and seasonal nature of modern farming, and will allow people to gain the skills and knowledge to specialise in activities that involve practical cattle and sheep handling.

The compulsory section includes skills related to handling and moving livestock; identification of external body parts, ideal conformation, and conformation faults of livestock; grazing management and feeding of livestock; presentation of livestock for sale or slaughter; and installation, dismantling, and storage of temporary electric fences. This section also includes knowledge of animal welfare and handling.

Elective 1 allows people to demonstrate the handling and treatment of specific livestock species. People can select skills that relate to handling and treatment of either cattle or sheep.

Elective 2 includes standards related to a range of knowledge and skills related to the use and care of farm horses, working and caring for a farm dog or team of dogs, sheep farming and cattle farming. This section allows people to select standards relevant to their own farming situation.

This qualification builds on the knowledge and skills in the National Certificate in Agriculture (General Skills) [Ref:1468].

This qualification also has a link with the following qualifications as an overall package of seasonal farm skills:

  • National Certificate in Agriculture (Animal Feeding and Pastures) (Level3) [Ref:1435];
  • National Certificate in Agriculture (Cattle Breeding) (Level3) with strands in Beef Cattle Farming, and Dairy Cattle Farming [Ref:1436];
  • National Certificate in Sheep Farming (Sheep Breeding) (Level3) [Ref:1443].

These qualifications may be completed concurrently or individually as a large proportion of farms run both cattle and sheep, and each of the qualifications are associated with seasonal activities on the farm.

On completion of this qualification people can progress to other agriculture industry qualifications such as the National Certificate in Agriculture (Level 4) with either the Cattle Farming or Sheep Farming strand [Ref: 0986].
