People may either complete the qualification requirements by 31 December 2017 or transfer to a programme leading to the replacement qualification.

Purpose

The National Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) is an introductory qualification which recognises the knowledge and skillsnecessary to provide a limited range of customer services, advise clients about retail hair products, and undertake reception duties and inventory control in a commercial salon.

People who hold this qualification are able to provide elementary hairdressing services under the supervision of a senior operator and demonstrate customer service skills both over the telephone and face-to-face. This qualification is made up of a compulsory and an elective section. The Elective section allows people to choose standards appropriate for their specific workplace role.

This qualification can contribute credits towards the National Certificate in Hairdressing (Professional Stylist) [Ref:0022] and the National Certificate in Barbering [Ref:0418].

Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Transition Arrangements

Version 6

Version 6 was issued in order to update the content of the qualification following the review of standards in the Beauty Services subfield.

Changes to content and structure

  • Because the Elective section now requires a minimum of 10 credits at level 3, the level of the qualification has increased from 2 to 3.
  • In Group A in the Elective section, standards must now be chosen from the Beauty Services subfield.
  • In Group B in the Elective section, standards must now be chosen from the Communication Skills subfield or the Service Sector field.
  • Expiring standards 2756, 2758, and 2867 were replaced by standards 25789, 25794, and 25790,respectively.
  • Standards 56, 57, 406, 497, 1277, 3501, 11949, 11955, 12008, and 12349 were removed from the Compulsory section.
  • Standards 21939, 25077, 25435, 25436, 25438, 25439, and 25791 were added to the Compulsory section.
  • The titles, domains, levels, and credits of reviewed standards in the Hairdressing domain were updated.

People currently enrolled in programmes leading to the award of version 5 may either complete that version or transfer to version 6.

This qualification contains standards that replace or are alternatives to earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring or replaced standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards – see table below.

People who have gained credit for the last versions of the expiring standards 2756, 2758, 2867, and 2868, which were registered in August 2008 and subsequently replaced by standards 25789, 25794, 25790, and 25791 respectively in August 2009, are eligible for HITO to arrange and pay for them to gain credit for these replacement standards. Trainees must complete the last versions of the replaced standards before 31 December 2009 to be eligible for this arrangement. People who are affected should contact HITO at the address below.

It is not intended that anyone is disadvantaged by these transition arrangements. However, anyone who feels they have been disadvantaged may appeal to the SSB at the address below.

Previous versions of the qualification

Version 5 was issued to replace standard 62 with standard 20929.

Version 4was issued to clarify the transition arrangements for the previous versions.

Version 3 was issuedfollowing the review of standards in the Hairdressingdomain.

Version 2 was issued to take into account the changes resulting from the review of standards in the Service Sector. Standard 59 was replaced by standard 11831.

Quality Management Systems
