The Five Authors
Phil Beuth: Former ABC Executive Discusses His Amazing 40-year Adventure
In 1955 Phil became the first employee of Capital Cities Communications/ABC.His new book,Limping on Water, is meeting with rave national reviews as it details his long career with Capcities, ABC-TV,and Good Morning America. As Capcities grew to become the nation’s most influential and respected media companies, Phil helped lead the way. In his book Phil discusses his 40-year adventure with ABC and as head of Good Morning America. His personal account is peppered with interesting and funny anecdotes about his partners and celebrities, including Ted Knight, Charlie Gibson, Frank Sinatra, Cher, Jackie Robinson, Barbara Walters, Burt Reynolds and Warren Buffet, to name just a few.
Larry King says, “One of the greatest broadcast executives ever, Phil Beuth, wrote a story of his career. Limping on water is a terrific read!”
From Regis Philbin: “The story of how this man, Phil Beuth, was the first to be hired by Tom Murphy and Dan Burke for this Capital Cities Company. Together they made the best shows ever on TV. Great man, great shows; and I miss them all.”
Myra Janco Daniels: Philanthropist, Founder of the Phil, the Naples Museum of Art, Author and… Rut Buster!
Myra’s accomplishments in and for our community are well known but her early career in public relations and advertising perhaps not so much. With her husband Draper Daniels she reined over an advertising giant, and their company was from where the television series “Mad Men” took their cue.
Her fundraising prowess knows no bounds, from the Salvation Army Latch-Key project for youngsters to the Project Chair for the new Mother Theresa museum, Myra isconstantly involved in numerous projects and good works.
“She has taken first her career and parlayed it into a spectacular second career. Probably many people don’t know about her first and second career, marketing, advertising, and teaching. I think Myra has created, because of her single-mindedness of purpose... an aura around Naples, FL of a little town that has panache and character different from many small towns around Florida and the country. And for that, you have to say Bravo to Myra.”— Judge Judy Sheindlin, American Lawyer, Judge, TV Personality and Author
Myra says of her book,Secrets of a Rut Buster: Breaking Rules and Selling Dreams, "This book tells my story. But it's really a story about belief and how it can be used as a tool to change lives. I hope that - at least in a small way - it helps you to achieve some big things in your life."
Suzi Weinert: Novelist Turns Series into Movies!
An Air Force brat turned military wife, Suzi’s investigation into bazaars, thrift shops, swap meets, and garage and estate sales was born of necessity. Moving more than 11 times across the United States and Germany – all the while raising five children and trying to make every new house a home – she quickly learned that whatever couldn’t be taken on a move could later be supplemented by her new destination’s military or civilian thrift shops.
But what began as a need quickly turned into a bona fide passion. So much so that, following a spine-chilling experience at a garage sale in the Virginia countryside she found herself writing a short story that would eventually turn into Garage Sale Stalker, her debut novel and the first in a series of Garage Sale mystery-thrillers. Now, living proof of the old adage that someone’s trash really is another’s treasure, Suzi finds herself in a position that most fantasize about. Her literary debut, penned when she was 72 years old and published when she was 75, was seen on the Hallmark Channel as a made-for-TV movie based on the book.
Hallmark Movie Channel Original thought that making a movie out of Suzi's novel series would be a great addition for their moviegoers. They were right!Garage Sale Mystery has been one of the most watched movies to date, starring leading actressLori Loughlin.
Jean Harrington: Her “Murder by Design” Series Strikes Home (pun intended!)
With titles such as, “Rooms to Die For” and “Killer Kitchens” could there be any doubt that an interior design deva is at the heart of these mysteries?
Three of her Naples-set, tongue-in-cheek Murders by Design Mystery Series have been winners in writing contests: The MonetMurders in the 2010 Lone Star Writing Competition, Designed forDeath in the 2011 Northwest Houston’s Emily Contest and The Design is Murder in the 2014 Florida Book Awards.
Jean also has two Irish historical romance novels to her credit: In the Lion’s Mouth and The Barefoot Queen.
She says, “Writing has me hooked, though the realization was a long time coming. As a child I wanted to be a foreign correspondent when I grew up. I must have been a romantic even then, but reality set in and instead I went to the exotic University of Rhode Island for a degree in English literature and stayed on as a teaching assistant while I earned my master’s degree.”
Before moving to Naples, Jean wrote advertising copy for Reed and Barton, Silversmiths, and claims she has the spoons to prove it. Then for 17 years, she taught English literature and writing at Becker College in Worcester, Massachusetts.Once in Naples, with time on her hands, she began to write—something she had longed to do for years.
Currently working on a new mystery, Jean is up to her knees in dead bodies and loving every minute of it.
Your host and moderator,Kathy Bertone
Kathy is author of The Art of the Visit: Being the Perfect Host; Becoming the Perfect Guest, a speaker, television guest, former lifestyle newspaper columnist and a member of the Naples Woman’s Club.
From hosting family for a week during the holidays, to being a guest at a friend’s vacation home for a weekend, The Art of the Visit offers smart strategies and thought-provoking insight for making those sometimes strained times together run more smoothly, and be more satisfying, for everyone. It is chock full of practical ideas delivered in an amusing and forthright fashion. "Visit Wizard" tips throughout the book give readers, young and old, the tools and tricks they need for making the times spent with family and friends the best they can possibly be—and stress-free!
Kathy has been quoted in numerous newspapers and magazines including US News and World Report, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, etc. This from a buyer from the store Anthropologie:
“This book goes far beyond usual tips on preparing the guest bathroom and making the beds. Even more importantly, it helps us to slow down, and look at the visit from other people's side, being it host's or guest's perspective. Basics of human dynamics and expectations are frequently forgotten when under stress that a visit, especially prolonged one, is sometimes bound to bring. The author reminds us of these, in an honest and humorous way. I especially loved thoughtful chapters on hosting old people and kids. No doubt I'll turn again to this book when my friends and relatives come next time. It's a well-written book, calming, useful, and fun.”
