COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to increase success in college by assisting students in obtaining the skills necessary to reach their educational goals. Topics will include time management, test-taking skills, study techniques, goal setting and college resources. The Fullerton College Catalog will also be reviewed.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this course is to provide an opportunity for students to learn and adopt methods to be successful in college.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Discuss how they are responsible for their success in college.
- Describe ways they can create a successful and satisfying experience in college.
- List and describe methods to:
- improve ability to recall information
- manage time more effectively
- read a textbook with improved retention
- prepare for and take tests
- take good notes
- listen with comprehension to a lecture
- acquire skills to change a habit
- recognize barriers to academic success
- Have a general understanding for the policies and regulations of FullertonCollege.
- Match resources available on campus that can assist students with problems such as those related to health, academics and personal relationships.
- Describe and discuss several different procedures for planning, monitoring and managing time.
- Discuss several procedures for focusing attention on the task at hand when reading, listening, and taking notes and tests.

EVALUATION METHODS:
To pass this course:
- Attendance is required and will be recorded at each class meeting. The instructor is to be notified prior to missing a class if it is impossible to attend. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange with the instructor to make up the work. Missing more than one class meeting may result in being dropped from the course. However, it is the student’s responsibility to withdraw from the course.
- You must successfully complete all assignments.
- You must participate in individual, group activities and discussions.
- You must successfully pass the final exam.
- You must be on time.
Grading will be based on the following:

89-80= B

GRADING POLICY: CR/NC letter grade option request must be submitted to Admission and Records by ……………… and once the decision has been made, it is irreversible.
CLASS PARTICIPATION: During the semester, on unannounced days, you will receive points for participating in class activities. This work CANNOT be made up if you are absent.
ATTENDANCE: Class attendance is critical. Attendance will be taken every class. You MAY be dropped for poor attendance (more than one). Do not, however, depend on the instructor to drop you from the course. If you do not turn in a drop slip, you will earn an F grade for the course.
BEHAVIOR: Do not do anything that will (1) prevent your instructor from teaching and/or (2) prevent another student from learning.
DO NOT:
- Be tardy
- Leave early (if you have to leave early, let the instructor know before class).
- Interrupt or talk over others.
- Bring visitors to class –your children, siblings or friends, etc. (I must enforce this rule because the school’s liability insurance does not cover visitors).
- Work on homework or copy notes for this class or any other class during class time.
- Eat or drink during class.
DO:
- Turn off cell phones and pagers before class.
- Respect every individual in this class.
- Refer to the Academic Honesty policy presented in the current Fullerton College Catalog.
- Listen quietly and refrain from talking and napping while the instructor is talking or while another student is talking to the class.

Please take note of the safety features in and close to your classroom, as well as study the posted evacuation route. The most direct route of egress may not be the safest because of the existence of roofing tiles or other potentially hazardous conditions. Similarly, running out of the building also can be dangerous during the severe earthquakes. During strong quakes the recommended response is to duck-cover- and hold until the shaking stops. Follow the guidance of your instructor. You are asked to go to the designated assembly area. Your cooperation during emergencies can minimize the possibility of injury to yourself and to others.
