CONCEPT NOTE : 'Nirukta Epistemology': Ten-Day Workshop

‘Bharat-Ratna Gulzari Lal Nanda Centre of Ethics and Philosophy’ is a Research Centre of Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra dedicated to promote studies in Philosophy, Ethics, Culture and Languages. With a lush green independent campus on the eastern bank of Brahma-Sarovar, this Centre is furnished with all essential facilities and infrastructure to organise Seminar/Workshop.

The Centre regularly organizes research activities such as lectures, seminars, workshops to disseminate Indian Cultural Values and Ideas, which stand relevant to address the challenges faced by the Humanity today. Also arranges students literary activities/workshops on current issues faced by Indian Society. Besides preaching the incredible legacy of Bharat-Ratna G.L. Nanda the Centre also takes up texts having incredible cultural value for thorough discussion. This workshop on – ‘NIRUKTA Epistemology’ is to take up intensive, critical and comparative analysis of deity element as discussed and interwoven in the text of Nirukta. It will also cover basics of Language such as analysis of Word-Types; principles, practices and examples of Etymology; traditional inheritance of Knowledge and primary and basic elements of Lexicography. We also aspire to compare these with principles expounded in works of Plato and Aristotle. Scholar's endeavour in this direction are most welcome.

Nirukta is an important Vedāṅga and is the oldest treatise on Divine Science with regards to Vedic deities. It mainly deals with the abstract and physical forms and deeds of Vedic deities on the basis of their invocation in Ṛgveda. Nirukta is also the oldest treatise of Etymology, Lexicography, Philology, Semantics and formation of language and also a systematic treatise on Nighaṇṭu. Expositions of Bṛhad-devatā, Mahābhārata, texts of Purāṇas and Vedic exegesis of Sāyaṇa and Dayanand may be taken into consideration, as Mahābhārata guides - इतिहासपुराणाभ्यां वेदं समुपबृंहयेत्।

Whole gamut of this great and important text of Yāska (700 BCE) is to be covered in twenty topics (List attached) in the ensuing workshop by erudite resource persons (list attached) invited from whole of the India.

A special session is proposed to be held on the importance and structure of Nighaṇṭu, which is regarded as the first lexicon of human library and forms the basis of Yāska’s Nirukta, which initiates with the statement - ' समाम्नायः समाम्नातः। स व्याख्यातव्यः।..' Here 'समाम्नायः' means 'the collection of selected Vedic words', which are collected and are to be explained for facilitation of the meaning of Veda.

The text of Nirukta also contains an important debate on 'Early anti-Vedic Scepticism'. This topic will also be taken up for a liberal discussion connecting it with similar ideas found in tradition.

At least thirty participants from whole of the country may attend it. Teachers, Research Scholars and Students of Kurukshetra University and its affiliated Colleges shall also be attending. Some local Resource Persons are also to be engaged. Dates for this workshop are February 9-18, 2017. Interested Research Scholars, Students and Teachers are to be benefitted.
