May 2012 Undergraduate Degree Report

Conducted and Prepared by Russell B. Lennon, Director of Career Services

May 1, 2013

Purpose

To determine whether or not recipients secured full or part time employment, where employed, job title, advanced degree plans, what source did they use to find employment and recipient comments (noted as provided).

Methodology

Responses to a four question and comments document (exhibit one) were gathered through telephone interviews. A total of three phone calls were made to graduates who did not respond to the initial phone call. In the absence of information secured by phone responses recorded on the annual Development Office release form were used where applicable.

Recipients

May 2012 undergraduate degree recipients were identified in a report prepared and presented by the Registrar’s office. A total of fifty four were provided. From this group eight were no longer available (moved with no forwarding information, phone no longer in service, incorrect phone number and address. etc). Of the remaining forty five information was acquired relating to thirty five students.

Benchmark

The article “1 in 2 new graduates are jobless or underemployed”written by Hope Yen, Associated Press in April, 2012 remains as the most current employment comparison benchmark.

Yen reported the following statistics based on an analysis of government data conducted for the Associated Press.“About 1.5 million, or 53.6%, of bachelor’s degree-holders under the age of 25 last year were jobless or underemployed, the highest share in the last 11 years. In 2000, the share was at a low of 41 percent, before the dot-com bust erased job gains for college undergraduates in the telecommunications and IT fields.”

College of St. Joseph responding graduates reported only 25.7% are unemployed. Once again this is very good news when compared to the national average of 53.5%.
