How to Make an Elf Hat for Your Pet

By Irene Stoutland

Materials You Need

  • For the hat, a piece of fabric big enough to fit the pattern, that will not fray, and is either green or red. (I used a left over piece of red corduroy).
  • For the trim, a piece of fabric much smaller than the one above, contrasting in color, that will not fray, and is also green or red. (I used a left over piece of green felt).
  • Thread, matching or not.
  • Optional: Beads with letters on them or any other decorations.

The Patterns Necessary

Measure your pet’s head around where you want your hat to go. Cut two triangles that on the bottom are half as long as you measured your pet’s head to be and about twice as tall. For these use the bigger piece of fabric and add at least a half an inch extra on every side except the bottom to allow for the seams. Using the smaller piece of fabric, cut a strip that is jagged on one side and straight on the other and is a little longer than your pet’s head is around.

Sewing It Together

Place the two triangles together facing each other and sew them together around the edges except for on the bottom and then turn it right side out. Then, sew the strip of fabric around the opening of the hat, jagged side up.

A Strap

If you want the hat to stay on better you can make a strap by taking a piece of thread and sewing either end of it to the seams so it goes under your pet’s chin. But if you do this, make sure you make it big enough so that your pet does not get choked and you can also sew a piece of fabric onto the strap so that it is more comfortable.

Optional

String the beads with letters on them onto a piece of thread in your pets name, loop it into a circle and sew it to the tip of your hat. Sew on any additional decorations you would like.

Modifications

If you use white trim on a red hat you can make a Santa hat.

Towers

The Egrets did an engineering challenge. They built towers out of one piece of card stock and one foot of tape. Following are some examples of their work.
