Re-sits

What happens if I fail a module and need to re-sit?

Re-sit’s are to be undertaken during the August re-sit period. If you have to re-sit an assessment in order to pass the module, the maximum mark you can achieve for the module is 40%.

It is your responsibility to ensure you know exactly what assessment you need to do and obtain the correct re-sit brief from Blackboard. Further information is available on UniLife. If you’re in any doubt please contact your Module Tutor or the Advice Zone immediately.

When is the deadline and where do I submit re-sit assessment(s)?

Work must be submitted no later than 4pm, 2 August 2017. If you are required to submit work to the Advice Zone, please ensure you use the correct barcoded coversheet. Please ensure you check your resit brief for submission arrangements. Don’t forget you can submit work earlier but not later than this time.

How do I re-sit failed assessments?

All re-sit briefs / assessments will be available on Blackboard. Further information will be made available when results are issued.

Does the 5 day late rule still apply?

No. During the summer re-sit period all assessments must be submitted by 4pm, 2 August 2017, otherwise you will be awarded a mark of zero automatically.

Do I have to pay for re-sits?

No. Re-sit assessments don’t attract any additional fees.

If there are 2 elements of coursework (e.g.) Coursework 1 & Coursework 2 , for a module and I only fail one, do I have to resit the whole module?

No. you only have to re-sit the failed element, indicated in your online results.

What happens if I fail or don’t submit my re-sit assessment?

If you don’t submit your resit work it could impact severely on your progression. The Academic Assessment Board may require you to repeat/substitute the module(s) in the following academic year. This means you’ll need to attend all teaching sessions and undertake all elements of assessment again. You will lose any marks you have achieved within the module in the previous year and they whole module will be capped at 40%. There may be financial implications for repeating module(s). If you have any questions in regards to your tuition fees or any outstanding debts, you must ensure you confirm the full cost with the University’s Revenue Unit. You can contact the Revenue Unit by telephone on 01443 483340 or by email on . We also strongly recommend you to discuss your situation with your Local Authority and any impact this may have on your tuition fee funding.

Note: Students are only allowed to repeat a module once. If you fail the module a second time, it is likely you will be discontinued

from your course.

When will I get my re-sit results?

Results are considered and approved by the respective Academic Assessment Board in September. Results will be available online for all students on 5 September 2017.

Extenuating Circumstances

What do I do if I was granted extenuating circumstances to take assessments in the summer as first attempts?

You will receive an email from the Advice Zone with details of what you need to complete in the summer. Unless otherwise stated, you need to access the re-sit assessment briefs via Blackboard as soon as your results are available. Further information is available on UniLife.

Repeats

What does Repeat or Substitute mean?

It means you will either have to repeat that specific module or substitute it for another one if it’s an optional module, in the next

academic year, with the approval of your course leader. This also means you must attend all teaching sessions and undertake all elements of assessment again. Any module with this status means you CANNOT undertake the re-sit assessments during August. If you do attempt to undertake these assessments in the summer re-sit period, any marks will not be valid or considered by the Assessment Board.

Note: Students are only allowed to repeat a module once. If you fail the module a second time, it is likely you will be discontinued

from your course.

Are repeat modules capped at 40% in the same way a resit is capped?

Yes. You will not be able to attain a grade higher than Pass or 40% in any repeated module (your actual assessment mark will be recorded and the overall module will be capped).

If you have any queries regarding this please contact the Advice Zone on 01443 668541 or .

Are there any fee implications for repeating?

There may be financial implications for repeating module(s). If you have any questions in regards to your tuition fees or any outstanding debts, you must ensure you confirm the full cost with the University’s Revenue Unit. You can contact the Revenue

Unit by telephone on 01443 483340 or by email on . We also strongly recommend you to discuss your

situation with your Local Authority and any impact this may have on your tuition fee funding.

What happens if I fail to pay for any outstanding tuition fees due to repeating a year?

It is your responsibility to ensure you pay the respective fee. We would remind you that any unpaid fees mean you are in breach of the University's Debt Collection Policy, which states:-

'A student who is in debt to the University may be excluded from any or all of the University services and may be refused

permission to re-enrol with the University until the debt is paid'

The University may take appropriate steps to recover any outstanding debts. If you fail to pay any outstanding fees, the University reserves the right to withdraw your access to the Library and your IT facilities. This may affect your ability to complete assessments thereby not meeting deadlines which can impact on your progression. This cannot be used to justify non-submission of assessments.

Additionally, failure to pay any outstanding fees may result in you being excluded from your course. Once you have been excluded for non-payment of fees you will not be permitted to re-enrol to continue your studies for the remainder of the academic year, even if you subsequently pay the outstanding monies. Further information on this procedure can be found on UniLife. If you continue to ignore requests for payment the University without further notice may commence with legal action to recover the outstanding debt that will affect your future credit rating.

Who do I speak to if I am having difficulties paying for any outstanding tuition fees due to repeating a year?

To avoid the above sanctions being imposed you should, without delay, contact the Revenue Unit to discuss your situation. Student Money Advice Team will also be able to give you confidential advice on a number of ways in which the University could

provide you with financial help. You can contact them on 01443 483778 or by email on .
