MINUTES OF THE 258th BUSINESS MEETING HELD IN THE LIBRARY OF THE RICHARDS BAY COMBINED SEAFARERS' CLUB ON THURSDAY 29 SEPTEMBER 2016.
1. WELCOME:
The meeting commenced at 16h40 when Rob Farren-Hanford welcomed all and everybody stood for the reading of the creed.
2. PRESENT:
Rob Farren-Hanford, Dave Teague, Bob Brindle, Hannes Pretorius and Allan Heydorn.
3. APOLOGIES:
Winston Lobo, Derek Wood, Keith Marks, Mike Patterson and Mark Classen.
4. VISITORS:
Hannes Pretorius.
5. CONFIRMATION OF THE MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING:
The minutes of the 257th business meeting held on 25 August 2016 were proposed
by Rob Farren-Hanford and seconded by Bob Brindle.
6. MATTERS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MINUTES:
No matters arising.
7. ADMINISTRATION:
7.1 Finance:
Nothing new to report.
7.2 Secretarial:
Nothing new to report.
8. EXCO:
Rob Farren-Hanford advises that there is a move afoot in Cape Town to combine the branch and EXCO meetings as these are attended by the same members. The Richards Bay branch supports such proposal.
9. CONGRESS:
Nothing to report.
10. MEMBERSHIP:
Rob Farren-Hanford welcomed Dave Teague, a founder member of the Richards Bay branch who has returned from Australia having spent four years there. Dave will give a presentation on his experiences in Australia at the next meeting.
11. TECHNICAL:
Nothing to report.
12. GENERAL:
12.1 Allan Heydorn mentioned the dawn raid on six of the leading container lines by the South African Competition Commission on 28 September 2016. Provisions of the Competition Act and the extensive powers of its officials were discussed.
12.2 Hannes reported that a crew member of the MV Iskandar which was arrested during 2015 and remained at the outer anchorage for several months has returned to Richards Bay. He thanked the Seafarers' Club which, with the assistance of the local business community supplied the crew with provisions.
