Recommendation 2015 Youth Civic Engagement Program

The inaugural Youth Civic Engagement Program (YCEP) History Explorers’ Youth Advisory Council will consist of around twenty youth aged 14-18 years old from the metropolitan DC area who have an interest in history, social justice or Museums.

What does an YCEP student do?

  • Earn up to 100 hours of Service Learning/ Community Service credit in a fun, exciting setting
  • Help design a comic guide on Japanese Internment and Racial Profiling
  • Develop Civic Engagement skills
  • Help design educational carts geared towards teenagers
  • Volunteer with Spark! Lab and learn about Invention
  • Be part of the planning team and help facilitate the National Youth Summit webcast in May
  • Receive snacks
  • Earn a certificate of participation
  • Meet curators and staff behind the scenes of the National Museum of American History (NMAH)
  • Explore connections between past events and present day issues
  • Participate in fun hands-on activities and creative programing
  • Speak up and out as a youth advocate
  • Meet and work with other teens with similar interests across DC and the Smithsonian
  • Gain important leadership, communication, and college and career skills
  • Learn more about history, social justice and Museum careers

What is the commitment for being an YCEP student?

  • Attend alternate Tuesday evening sessions from 4pm-7pm and Saturdays from 10am-2pm from Octo 6th, 2015-June 11th, 2016 at the National Museum of American History at 14th St. and Constitution Ave, NW, Washington, DC, 20001.
