Magazine Assignment Grade 7

Task: Creation of a magazine in a group of two or three. Examples of the many genres of magazines out there will be examined. The typical content and layout of magazines will also be discussed. The magazine topic/theme/genre may be determined by the group but it must be approved by home and by me.

Requirements:

Remember, you are taking the role of writer, editor, graphic design artist, illustrator, advertisers, etc – basically, an entire magazine staff!!

You are permitted to use computer graphics, cutouts, pictures, photos, and of course, your own art work. * No more than 50% of the assignment can be computer generated!! *

Front and Back Cover - your cover should look professional; do not overlook the finer details such as price, U.P.C. bar code, etc.

Table of Contents - look at examples from other magazines

Articles – you are required to have 2 long and 3 short articles. Articles must be your own original work and not copied from another magazine.

Editorial - express your opinion on some issue relevant to the theme of your magazine or write a commentary about one of your full-length articles.

Advertisements –3 full-page, 2 half-page, and 1 quarter-page ad. Make up the products being advertised in your magazine. Remember to choose products that reflect the target audience of your magazine.

Fillers – 4 fillers. A filler can be items such as letters to the editor, horoscopes, surveys, quiz, crossword, puzzles, contests, poems, “how to” tips, etc.

Tips for success:

-  Choose a “high” interest topic for you!

-  Workload must be distributed fairly/evenly (Each student will be responsible for contributing in a variety of ways.)

-  Use class time efficiently

-  Have any materials needed ready for class

-  Balance / plan your work load – don’t do all the art “stuff” first, but rather, spread it out

-  Save T.O.C (Table of Contents) for last so you can number your pages

-  Be creative and take advantage of your imagination and the samples provided in class

-  As always, do your best work and have fun!!

*Please complete the schedule on back as you complete each section.

Completion will help “gauge” your time!!
