How to …
Visit the library
The library is open from 7:15 until 3:15 every school day. On most half days, the library remains open until 3:15.
Get on the library home page
Open the Berlin High School home page. The library’s link is a tab on the left side of the page. The library link has three parts: Online databases, Collaborative Plans, and the Library Catalogue.
Check out a book from the library
Any book that is not a reference book (so, not marked with an ‘R)’ can be checked out by any Berlin High student. The book is checked out for two weeks. Books can be renewed in the library, or at home. To renew a book from home, follow the directions on the library home page..
Visit the library from a study
Ask a subject teacher for a pass. Bring the pass to the study teacher, who will send you to the library.
Read today’s newspaper
Today’s newspapers are on a shelf in the cafeteria, available to everybody. We subscribe to these newspapers: New York Times, Hartford Courant, USA Today, New Britain Herald, and Berlin Citizen. After 2:15, we invite any member of the B.H.S. community to take the newspaper home.
Read one of 70 magazines
Some magazines are in the cafeteria, by the newspapers. More magazines are in the library. We invite any member of the B.H.S. community to bring hoe any old copy of a magazine.
Request a book to be bought for the library
Bring your suggestion to Mr. Scannell. He will investigate the title, and possibly buy a copy for the library.

The smallest copier in the library front, and the copier in the Guidance department are available for student use. There is no charge for copies.
Use a school computer for the first time.
On the top line, enter first name.last name
On the second line, enter bhs. Then, enter, with no spaces, your student number.
(student number will be on your schedule)
The screen will ask you to set a password. Remember this password, your teacher does not have a copy of it. This password will be good for any school computer.
Access databases in school
Start on the Berlin High School home page. Click on the library tab on the left side of the page. Then click on the database tab that will appear. The databases listed have short descriptions about their uses. Select the link to any database, and click it.
Access databases at home or from a personal device.
Databases cannot be accessed from home through the library home page. Each database has its own address, username, and password that a user must use when accessing from home or from a personal device like a telephone or a tablet. Mr Scannell has the list of these addresses, usernames and passwords, and he will give a copy to any member of the B.H.S. community.
Use a personal device like a phone or table in school, and be connected to the school wi fi.
Every B.H.S. student has a gmail account. The user name is in this pattern:
first name.last name @edu,berlinschools.org
The password is the same school password used on any other computer in the school.
