The hub is a collaborative group of nonprofit organizations and government funded agencies committed to moving individuals from poverty to self-sufficiency. The hub envisions a future where households it serves are able to overcome financial emergencies and gain lasting economic stability.

As a volunteer you will work with participants one-on-one to develop a plan to meet their individual needs, such as: find jobs, secure safe and stable housing, make ends meet through public benefits and tax credits, and obtain quality referrals for services like childcare and healthcare. Making a Difference with the hub by becoming an Advocate

The hub is a collaborative group of nonprofit organizations and government agencies committed to moving individuals from poverty to self-sufficiency. The hub envisions a future where households it serves are able to overcome financial emergencies and gain lasting economic stability. Qualifications: Hub Advocates are bright, motivated adults with a strong desire to get to know and give back to their community. We’re looking for people of all backgrounds who are determined and committed to helping others by lending their pro-active problem-solving skills. Advocates must be supportive listeners with a willingness to get to know people in the area and the services available to help them. (Note: Interviews will be required for this position).

Duties and Responsibilities: Hub volunteers (known as Advocates) are needed to work side-by-sidewith usually low-income individuals to address immediate needs (e.g., employment, housing, public benefits, health care, education, etc.) and comprehensive, long-term support designed to help families break the cycle of poverty. Advocates are needed to:

  • Meet one-on-one with hub participants assessing needs and providing direct and referral services. You might help somebody write their first resume, locate a G.E.D. program, find affordable housing or child care, research job openings in the area, or simply provide listening and support.
  • Communicate regularly with participants to create goals, check in on participant progress, update participants on new resources/information, etc.
  • Take part in volunteer trainings (a beginning general introduction training as well as continued spotlight trainings) and listen to guest speakers. Trainings focus on issues/challenges facing our participants including: understanding the public housing system, public benefits, mental health issues, and employment needs.
  • This commitment calls for a minimum of four hours in the office each week. Tools are provided in the office to help you guide your work, from resource databases to staff members with great ideas about projects you can initiate.

Benefits to Becoming a hub Advocate: Thehub provides direct, hands-on experience with poverty, unemployment, housing, public assistance, and a variety of other issues, by working one-on-one with community members (participants). While volunteering at the hub, there are many opportunities to gain and develop leadership skills in working with diverse groups of people, office management, public relations and event planning, and nonprofit organization and management. You will make a variety of contacts in the business and social services world, and will enhance your resume by gaining new leadership skills.

If you’re interested, please fill out the application attached here by January 1st. If qualified, you will be interviewed by hub partners. If accepted into the pilot program, you will be attending training in Oshkosh in late January. Then you’ll be ready to start your advocate experience with participants once the semester starts!
