West Dunbartonshire 2012 Sports Awards
Overview
The West Dunbartonshire Sports Awards provides the opportunity to thank coaches, volunteers and athletes for their dedication, and also to recognise their achievements.The time period that you should base your nomination on is: 1 April 2011 to 31 March 2012.All nominations must clearly demonstrate why the contribution of the nominee should be recognised.
When nominating for the coach and volunteer awards, you should take into account the given criteria below and provide clear evidence as to how the nominee has:
- Been creative in developing their coaching/volunteering skills
- Ensured a high quality experience for their players and teams
- Developed long-term opportunities to their community, group of athletes or individuals.
All coaching nominees must hold a recognised governing body of sport coaching qualification. The winners of all coaching awards will go on to represent West Dunbartonshire at the sportscotland Annual Coaching Awards in October 2012. sportscotland is the national agency for sport and is committed to recognising coaches across the country for their achievements. When nominating for athletes’ awards, all information must detail particular successes. This success can be defined as:
- PBs, performance or competitive results denoting achievement
- The athlete overcoming physical, personal or social challenges in order to achieve a sporting goal.
All nomination forms should be submitted by Friday 1st June 2012. The ‘Award Nomination form’ can be found on page 5 of this document. This form can be completed electronically by typing the information into the boxes provided and emailing it . Alternatively you can post your completed form to Sports Awards 2012, West DunbartonshireSports Council, 8 Maxwell Street, CLYDEBANK, G81 3RA to arrive before or on the 1st of June 2012.

Awards criteria and evidence
- Community Coach Award 2012 (supported by sportscotland)
This award will be made to a coach who has supported the development of athletes or teams, and who has made a significant impact on the participation levels of people taking part or staying in sport.
Evidence
- Significantly increased the sporting opportunities available to their community
- Delivered regular quality coaching sessions to a group or to individual athletes
- Created a safe and enjoyable environment for participation
- Development Coach Award 2012 (supported by sportscotland)
This award will be made to a coach who, by using a player-centred approach, has ensured that athletes or teams with emerging talent have made an impact at district, regional or national level.
Evidence
- Adopted a player-centred approach to coaching
- Responsible for identifying and nurturing talent in line with the sport’s long term player development model
- Coached athletes or teams who have made an impact at district, regional or national level that may include a significant improvement in performance, although not necessarily the winning of titles
- Performance Coach Award 2012 (supported by sportscotland)
This award will be made to a coach working with athletes and teams at the highest level in their sport. The award looks for evidence of player-centred development leading to successful performance at the highest level of Scottish, UK or international sport.
Evidence
- Adopted a player-centred approach to coaching
- Made a difference to the performance of an athlete or team based on resources available to them
- Coached athletes or teams who have delivered a successful performance at the highest level of Scottish, UK or international sport
- Young Coach Award 2012 (supported by sportscotland)
This award will be made to a coach aged 25 years or younger in recognition of their achievements to date. This award looks for young coaches who have invested in their development as a coach and have made a significant impact on the people they coach.
Evidence
- Helped their athletes or teams reach their potential by dedicated support
- Invested time and energy in their development as a coach, undertaking continuous professional development opportunities
- Disability Coach Award 2012 (supported by sportscotland)
This award will be made to a coach working with people with a disability. The award looks for evidence of player-centred development leading to successful performance of athletes or teams with a disability.
Evidence
- Adopted a player-centred approach to coaching and helped to increase participation and development opportunities for people who have a disability
- Coached disabled athletes or teams who have made an impact and significant improvement in performance, although not necessarily the winning of titles
- Schools’ Volunteer Award 2012 (supported by sportscotland)
This award will be made to a volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to the introduction and early development of sport for young people under the age of 18.
Evidence
- Delivered quality experiences in a safe environment
- Contributed to the development of the basic skills of a young athlete or a young team
- Created a safe, fun and nurturing environment for development
- Best Performing Junior Athlete (WD Sports Council Award)
This award will be made to the best juniorathlete in West Dunbartonshire (less than 16 years old). The award looks for evidence that the previous year was a success for the performer

- Best Performing Senior Athlete (WD Sports Council Award)
This award will be made to the best senior athlete in West Dunbartonshire (over 16 years of age).The award looks for evidence that the previous year was a success for the performer

- Services to Sport (WD Sports Council Award)
The award is made to an individual who has displayed outstanding dedication to sport in West Dunbartonshire over a prolonged period of time. This award is open to any individual who has shown dedication to sport i.e. committee members, coaches, volunteers, grounds staff etc.
Evidence
- A minimum 10 of year service in sport
- Club Volunteer Award (WD Sports Council Awards)
This award will be presented to any volunteer within a club who has shown sustained and enthusiastic support in the last year. This award is open to all individuals, apart from coaches, in order to highlight the diversity of volunteering that exists within clubs. These individuals may include committee members, grounds staff, cleaners, those who provide teas and coffees etc.

- Sustained volunteering in their role for the last year
- Club members are prepared to back any potential nomination
