RAHWAY, N.J. – Rahway Flag Rugby announces the 5th Annual Rahway Rugby Day on July 23, 2016 to be held at Green Field on Madison Avenue, Rahway. The Games will include a full day of flag rugby, festivities, and great food & drink.

The “Games” features regular youth flag games, followed by the “Rugby Girls Rule” games, which gives all the girls in each program to showcase their rugby skills. The day culminates with our second annual Alumni Game of past “Myths and Legends” of Union County Youth program. No age restrictions for the Myths & Legends game.

Youth teams will compete in four grade-based divisions ranging from kindergarten to 9th grade. Games begin at 9 am and will continue to 1 pm.

Teams have been invited from Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and New York, as well as local New Jersey teams. Past years have seen over 350 players. This year, we expect over 300 participants. Fields are located at the tree-lined (plenty of shade) Madison Park (Green Field) in Rahway, N.J. (see directions). Restrooms are on the location.

In the rugby community, the home team is expected to provide post-game refreshments and food. This year, Rahway Flag Rugby will provide coffee, water, sports drinks, bagels, muffins, breakfast bars, watermelon, and oranges. Additionally, the Rahway PAL will be sponsoring refreshments and renowned hot dogs in the afternoon. The food will be centrally located at the Snack Stand.

The Rahway Fire Department will be on hand to show off the trucks. Last year, the Rahway Fire Department paid the tourney a visit by doing a "Wet Down" with the kids. Also, the kids got to tour the BEAR, which is the Union County Tactical Vehicle (think of an urban tank). The City of Rahway will be represented at the tournament.

Team Registration:

In lieu of a registration fee, we are asking that teams do 3 things:

1.  Bring can and dry goods per player to donate to the Rahway-based food bank (collection tables will be at the field – details to follow)

2.  Make a charitable donation to a Mudturtle in need. MORE DETAILS TO FOLLOW.

3.  Buy a Myths & Legends t-shirt and join in on the fun

Rahway History:

Rahway Flag Rugby was sponsored through a grant by Investors Savings Bank and was established in 2011. The team has grown from 18 players to almost 75 players. The team is part of the Union County-based Mudturtle Youth Flag Rugby program, which is celebrating our 12th year. Other teams in the program are Berkeley Heights, Cranford, Westfield, Dunellen, and Scotch Plains/Fanwood. The program has over 500 children competing.

Donations Support:

Mudturtle Rugby of which Rahway Rugby takes part in has always taken on worthy causes. Last year, Rahway Flag Rugby, part of Mudturtle Rugby, raised over $4,000 for a local resident. During the year the program contributed to a number of causes such as contributed to the Newman fund in his final battle against cancer. Additionally, teams that attend the Rahway Ruggerfest are asked to bring donations for the Rahway Food Pantry as their entrance fee.
