Assignment #2.4: Locating Sources
With this assignment, you will begin to locate sources to dialogize (to put in conversation) with Gilbert’s claims/sub-argument that you selected, and to respond to queries that you developed. Keep in mind that your sources do not need to directly answer your query. In fact, they probably will not. These sources should, however, provide you with information related to the issues raised by your query. Based on the content you find, you will drawyour own conclusions as a response to your question.
You can refer to the “Researching on the Healey Library Website” document, accessible via the Resources page on the class wiki, for instructions on how to access the Healey Library databases.
Please locate onesource from each of the following categories.
- An academic, peer reviewed, journal article from a psychology journal, accessed via the Healey Library online databases.
- An academic, peer reviewed article drawn from a Healey Library database of another academic discipline (i.e.: anthropology, economics, sociology, etc).
- Any additional source or document that you believe constructively offers content in relation to your query. This may be a newspaper article, work of art, music, literature, essay, etc. I urge you to be creative but considerate in your selections; keep in mind issues of credibility and relevance as you work on this selection.
After you have found the sources you want to work with, make sure to read them and prepare a response for eachsource according to the following instructions:
- For each source selection, prepare a citation list entry in MLA format, according to the guidelines laid out in your Rules for Writers Handbook. Please refer to the “Directory to MLA works cited models” on page 458 for the locations of the citation entry directions for specific source types. The directions themselves are found in section 59b, which begins on page 490.
- Then, under the citation listing for each selection, I would like you to write a short paragraph (4-5 sentences) that explains its key points and how it is relevant to your investigation. This is your opportunity to summarize what the article you have selected is saying, meaning what it is. Make sure to give specific, relevant detail and to summarize in your own words. Do not copy-paste article abstracts – this is simply plagiarism and you will receive a score of 0 for the assignment.
One hardcopy of this document is due on Monday, October 15th. This assignment is worth 9 points (3 points for the work done with each source).
