Shanghai, October 2016. Whether innovative solutions for the acoustic insulation and fire proofing of rail vehicles, personal protective equipment, or self-vulcanizing insulation, ContiTech will showcase its complete range of coated fabrics and various innovative materials at Cinte Techtextil China in Shanghai (October 12 to 14, E5-A01) to not only provide safety and health for mankind, but also save energy and reducing consumption for industry. “The basis of this is a broad selection of more than 100 fabrics with a wide range of qualities and over 300 elastomer coating materials that can be combined for practically every application,” says Rodrigo Maia, who heads the Engineered Coated Systems segment.

Folding bellow materials for rail vehicles

ContiTech provides not only folding bellow materials for rail vehicles, but also tailor-made solutions with universal applicability. The materials can be widely used in rail vehicle, buses, boarding bridges, etc. Whether in semi-transparent, colored or metallic versions, all folding bellow materials have excellent ageing, fire and abrasion resistance. Moreover, they can withstand significant mechanical stress and have a long service life.

High-tech materials for personal protective equipment

Innovative materials for personal protective equipment (PPE) offer a great deal more protection against chemicals and gases than the conventional materials used in disposable suits. Hazardous substances such as chlorinated hydrocarbons and ammonia are unable to penetrate the high-tech materials, which have a high resistance to acids and other aggressive chemicals. In addition, the protective equipment's tensile strength offers maximum safety and the material is also lightweight and comfortable to wear – a major benefit for the relief forces, whose work often involves a high level of physical exertion.

The equipment's properties are thanks to the ContiBarrierSystem, which stands out due to its combination of elastomeric composite materials and two embedded, ultra-thin polymer layers. This gives it an exceptionally high level of impermeability to virtually all gaseous, liquid, and solid media, even if a barrier layer is destroyed or damaged.

Safe long-term storage of gases and steam

ContiTech develops and produces gas holder diaphragms based on a wide spectrum of backing fabrics and elastomer coatings for a virtually unlimited range of potential applications. The wide range of materials combined with special fabrics make the diaphragms resistant to chemicals, hot and cold temperatures, and pressure.

As a result, it is possible to store steam and gases either temporarily or over the long term while simultaneously maintaining the operating pressure required in each case. The principle behind this is that a reciprocating piston moves up and down in the holder, adjusting the storage capacity to the fill volume so as to keep the gases at operating pressure. Here, the ContiTech diaphragm ensures that the seal between the holder wall and piston remains tight for a long time – over years of operation in temperatures reaching up to 120°C and in an environment with hundreds of thousands of reciprocating movements. Gas holder diaphragms are frequently used in holders for the temporary storage of blast-furnace gases, steam accumulators for tank farms, and – in sewage treatment plants – storage systems for fermentation gas and biogas.

Flexible at all times: ContiTech rubber storage tanks

When it comes to the transportation, temporary storage, or collection of liquids, ContiTech's flexible containers are right for the job. Their latest field of application is the transportation of resins for the wood industry. The truck attachment made from fabric-reinforced butyl rubber can be assembled within only 30 minutes to transport the resin to its destination. The container can be subsequently folded down quickly and easily, thereby allowing the loading area to be reloaded with wood for the journey back and preventing empty runs. The material and seams are absolutely leak-tight. Being highly resistant to mechanical strain, the elastomer material has no trouble at all withstanding the container being frequently filled and folded down. The storage of bonding agents constitutes another innovative field of application for the containers. Since there is no air column above the liquid to be stored, substances that are sensitive to oxygen can be handled excellently.

Insulated CTP ducting systems reduce CO2 emissions

Systematically insulating industrial plants can yield enormous savings in energy and therefore lower CO2 emissions and costs. In Germany alone, the amount of energy lost as a result of poorly insulated ducting systems is equivalent to the amount generated by four medium-sized coal power plants in a year. ContiTech has developed a solution to combat this problem: the Conti Thermo-Protect insulation system – a highly flexible insulation material that can be used to enhance the efficiency of even complex ducting and piping systems and reduce heat losses by up to 80%.

The silicone material self-vulcanizes at temperatures as low as 80°C and is available as a paste, hose, or molded product. The ductile mass insulates couplings and valves, even in places that proved impossible to insulate in the past. The material is self-adhesive, water repellent and self-extinguishing, UV-resistant, and weatherproof. It can be used in ambient temperatures ranging from -50°C to +250°C – for example, in heating or hydraulic systems, thermal oil installations, and vulcanizing presses.

For every application: elastomer sheeting

ContiTech's elastomer sheeting satisfies a wide range of practical requirements. The sheeting is processed to become highly precise static and dynamic seals, but can also be used to create many other products such as scrapers, laggings and suspension elements, floor coverings, and cutting boards. A wide range of starting materials allows for the development and production of elastomer sheeting for practically every application. Using modern internal mixers and rolling mills, ContiTech processes nearly all polymers and colors into high-quality compounds. Here, automation and process control guarantee reproducible, maximum dimensional accuracy while simultaneously minimizing tolerances. The result is elastomer sheeting made from SBR, NR, or EPDM that has a high resistance to temperatures and substances. Sheeting made from silicone elastomers are used in the food and chemical industries while sheeting made from fluoroelastomers is used in automotive technology and aeronautics.

ContiTech Elastomer Coatings business unit is part of ContiTech division of Continental. It is known for innovative printing blankets, diaphragm materials and diaphragms, Materials for life rafts and protective clothing, as well as wetsuits, flexible tanks, and gas holder diaphragms. A new plant in China will start production in the beginning of 2017, which strongly improve local service capability.
