TERMS OF REFERENCE

Position title:Communications Officer

Reports to:WWF Greater Mekong Marketing and Communications Manager

Supervises:None

Grade:N/A (consultant contract)

Location:Hanoi – WWF Greater Mekong - Programme Support Team

Time:1 June2008– 31 August 2009 –Extendable with good performance

  1. Major Functions:
  2. To work as a Communications Officer of the WWF-TRAFFIC “A Matter of Attitude” Project. Assist the WWF Greater Mekong Marketing & Communications Manager (MCM) in implementing activities of the WWF component of the project.
  3. Develop and maintain good relations with the media and WWF network.
  4. Assist the PST Communications Team in general communications work, including translation, press clippings, production and salesof communications items, general administration and event coordination.
  5. Assist the MCM in promoting WWF and communicating its conservation messages to the target audiences, using the media, the website, and other means of communications.
  1. Major Duties and Accountabilities:
  1. In charge of implementing daily work of the Wildlife Trade Campaign Project (WLT Project), particularly in the PR/media, campaigning and school education components. The jobs include organizing events, such as the media training workshops, press conferences, teacher training workshops, and school/university contests/events, monitoring the media coverage and other exposure work, and writing quarterly project activity reports to be sent to the Project Coordinator. Responsible for admin work of the project as instructed by the project coordinator.
  2. Assist the MCM in contacting and working with printing/advertising companies to coordinate the production (design and printing) of communications materials and products, following the WWF international guidelines. Make sure of printing consistency and overall quality of printed products. Distribute these materials to recipients as directed by the MCM.
  3. Develop and maintain strong relationships with journalists in Vietnam.Together with the MCM, coordinate media relations activities:

-Frequently feed local print media, radio and TV with information, updates, material and documents on WLT Project, as well as WWF Greater Mekong regional programmes. Assist in translating press releases and news stories.

-Frequently organize media briefings

-Assist in organizing press trips

  1. Assist the MCM in keeping constant communication lines with donors and partners.
  2. Translate communications materials and publications (Eng-VN and VN-Eng)
  3. Assist the Webmaster in frequently updating news on WWF Greater Mekong website, re-organizing and updating the current WWF Greater Mekong’s photo databases (hard copies, soft copies and slides), available in PST Office in Hanoi
  4. When needed, assist the film crew in producing TV PSAs and documentaries for the WLT Project, as well as for other programmes/projects at WWF GMP.
  5. Classify and file press clippings
  1. In charge of admin/secretarial work for the WWF Greater Mekong communications team
  2. When possible, and if requested, help the Vietnam Programme’s projects in their communications events

IV.Working Relationships:

  1. Internal:
  2. Interact regularly with the MCM, English Editor/Film Consultant, Environmental Education Officer, and relevant TRAFFIC staff to implement the Wildlife Trade Campaign Project.
  3. Interact regularly with the communications team to contribute to implementation of the Greater Mekong Programme’s communications strategy and work plan.
  4. Interact closely with PST members to contribute to achievement of objectives of WWF Greater Mekong
  5. Interact closely with other communications officers and project staff to assist them in their communications activities.

  2. Work closely with all partners and stakeholders in the Wildlife Trade Campaign Project
  3. Work with the media and the PR and advertising agencies to get the biggest exposure for the project
  4. Work with printing/advertising companies and other contracted service providers for the production and publication jobs.

V.Minimum Qualifications:

1.Knowledge: University degree in communications, public relations, the English language, or relevant technical area; good knowledge of media and public relations work; Basic knowledge of environment and conservation issues; Excellent written and spoken English.

2.Experience: At least two-year experience working at a similar position; Experience working for an international organization is desirable.

3.Skills and Abilities: Excellent English and Vietnamese writing skill; Good computer skill; Flexibility and ability to work under pressure
