SOL 2

Linn of Tummel

8th April 2018

FINAL DETAILS

LOCATION: The Assembly field is on the Foss Road about 5km west of Pitlochry. However, event parking is in public car parks in Pitlochry and buses will be used to transfer competitors to Assembly.

TRAVEL AND PARKING: Parking is in public car parks in Pitlochry. Competitors will be bussed to the Assembly field from a bus stop next to the Elizabeth Yule Bus garage at grid ref. NN 937582, postcode PH16 5AN. It is an 8km ride to Assembly, but with a transfer point at about 5km necessitated by the buses used and narrowness of the single track road. The departure and transfer points will be marshalled, as will the drop-off at Assembly. The return journey uses the same transfer process.

The first buses will leave Pitlochry at 09:15.

Travel time to the transfer point is about 15min and from transfer to Assembly about 5min. However, because of the limitations mentioned, buses can only leave from Pitlochry every 30min or so, which means the time from Pitlochry to Assembly could be anything from less than 30min to almost an hour.

ASSEMBLY: Registration (open from 09:30), Start (200m away; 30m climb), Finish, String, First Aid, ScotJOS cake stall, toilets and a tent for bag drop/shelter are all at Assembly. We encourage clubs to bring their tent to put up along the run-in.

This field is normally used for sheep grazing, although no sheep there at the moment.

DOGS: We are sorry, but no dogs, apart from assistance dogs, are allowed on the buses transferring competitors.

ENTRY-ON-THE-DAY COSTS: We intend to publish the number of maps available for Entry-on-the-Day on the ESOC website soon after entries close at midnight on Thursday 5th April. Prices for EOD are now available on the event page on theESOC website:

Hire of SIAC cards is £2.50 and a charge of £60 will be made if lost.

White and Yellow course maps and control descriptions should be collected from Registration, which is inAssembly. Some sections of the White, Yellow and Orange courses follow a taped route, shown on the course overprint and highlighted in the control descriptions. In addition, it has been necessary to relax the rule for White (technical difficulty 1) that navigation is always along paths and tracks. One leg follows an electricity power line, with controls at pylons. Please check this out on the map before juniors start their course so that they know what to look for.

Maps are printed by StirlingSurveys and will be on waterproof paper. Control descriptions are on the course maps and loose descriptions will be available in the start lanes.

SHADOWING: Parents are reminded that they should declare if they are actually helping a junior competitor as opposed to following, and to remain competitive themselves to restrict any shadowing until after they have run.

TERRAIN: Linn of Tummel is a fine orienteering area comprisingmostly open hillside with heather, crags, rock features and scattered birch trees with some larger areas of woodland. There are areas of impassable crags which should not be crossed. Caution should be given to water features due to recent weather, which might still be obscured by snow.

Fence/wall crossing: there are fence/wall crossing on all courses, please cross with great care. Please report any damages at the finish or download.

A quiet public road runs through the middle of the area. All courses cross the publicroad. The two road crossings will be marshalled. Although traffic is very light, if a vehicle is approaching a marshal will alert you and it might be necessary for you to allow it to pass. Please comply with their instruction.

SAFETY: Competitors take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety. You must carry a whistle, and this will be checked at the start. Waterproof jackets may be made compulsory in adverse weather – look out for notices in Assembly. There will be a phone number on the map for emergencies.

All Competitors should return to Assembly and download even if they do not complete their course. Course closure is at 16:30. All competitors should return to download at Assembly by 16.30.

Since you will be away from your car while travelling to and from Assembly, make sure you have enough warm clothing and food and drink with you as well as your whistle and waterproof jacket.

STRING COURSE: This is located at the east end of the Assembly field, with the theme “ESOC Ted and His Friends”.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS, HOSPITALS, etc: If you have a medical condition that the First Aid team should know about please print off the Medical Form from a link in the ESOC website: Fully complete form, bring it to the event in a sealed envelope and lodge it at Registration in Assembly. The form will be destroyed after the event if you don’t collect it after your run.
