Position

TEACHER - MIDDLE

SCHOOL COUNSELLOR

QUALIFICATIONS

School Counsellors are teachers who have additional specialized training (Master’s Degree in Counselling). This enables them to facilitate both comprehensive developmental and preventative programs, as well as proactive, remedial and crisis intervention services to students and their families.

·  Teacher training (elementary preferred) with a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology or equivalent.

·  Master’s coursework to include individual and group counselling processes, family counselling, theories of counselling, nature and assessment of behaviour disorders.

·  Must possess exceptional presentation skills and have proven recent experience presenting to classes, staff and district personnel.

·  Must possess exceptional organizational and time management skills, including the ability to manage a schedule involving multiple schools.

·  Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills.

·  Demonstrated experience as a highly effective team member both in schools and on the district team.

·  Eligible for B.C. Certification.

·  Punjabi speaking is an asset.

Case Management:

·  Assist in identification and referral of students who may need ongoing counseling services to outside agencies.

·  Assist in designation of students within ministry categories.

·  Assist children and their families in accessing community services which would support their needs.

·  Assist schools in developing Behaviour Plans and Safety plans for students with high needs.

·  Monitor the progress of students working on behaviour plans.

·  Review and/or collect relevant documentation and data.

·  Facilitate the development of IEPs for moderate/intensive behaviour students.

·  Facilitate Care Team and IEP meetings for moderate/intensive behaviour students.

Duties would include, but not exhausted by:

·  Facilitating, coordinating and implementing services for students at tiers 1, 2 and 3.

·  Provide preventative remedial and/or social development programming.

·  Attend school Based Team meetings when required.

·  Support schools and district in the Social Responsibility goals.

·  Provide counseling services for short duration to support the emotional needs of individual students.
