Volunteer to be a member of one of the City of Benson’s Boards or Commissions!!

Thank you for your interest in helping the City of Benson promote a positive, growing community. Volunteer service is a powerful and effective way to address many local challenges. Through service and volunteering you can made a difference and foster civic improvment while taking advantage of the opportunity to work with your neighbors. Below is a list of our Boards and Commissions and a summary of each. Board of Adjustment:Established to hold hearings regarding variance applications and approve or deny the application based on information received from petitioner and city departments. This board meets on an as needed basis and is coordinated through Planning and Zoning staff

Board of Appeals: Meets upon request to hear appeals from citizens who disagree with a decision rendered by the Building Official. This board works closely with the Building Department.

Historic Preservation Commission:Established to plan and conductvoluntary programs to collect, preserve and exhibit items of historical interest and to accept custody of items contributed or loaned. This board meets on a monthly basis and works the Planning and Zoning staff.

Library Board: The Library Board meets the second Tuesday of each month at 4pm in the library. The duties and responsibilities are largely advisory in nature concerning the operation and policies of the library.

Planning and Zoning Commission: Established to act as an advisory commission for development decisions and petitions. The Commission makes recommendations to Mayor and Council regarding site plans, subdivision plats and zoning ordinances. This Commission meets on a monthly basis.

City of Benson 4th of July Committee: In charge of the City 4th of July celebration and oversees all aspects of the event from fundraising to routing parade floats. Works closely with all City departments, particularly the Parks and Recreation Department. This committee meets as needed, up to several times a week in the months leading up to the 4th of July.

Public Safety Retirement Boards for Police and Fire Departments: These boards were established to review eligibility of Police and Fire members for pension benefits. These boards meet annually or as needed.
