STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

SLO #1

Students will demonstrate the ability to recognize and correct basic sentence faults and grammatical errors.

SLO #1 aligns with Course Objective #2 (Recognize and correct basic sentence faults such as comma splices, run-on sentences, and sentence fragments) and #5 (Differentiate between nominative and objective case pronouns).

SLO #1 aligns with Department Learning Outcome #1 (Students will communicate effectively through appropriate modes of communication (listening, speaking, reading, writing) as they pertain to the business environment with emphasis on the use of computer technology).

SLO #2

Students will demonstrate the ability to edit all forms of business documents, correcting errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and number usage.

SLO #2 aligns with Course Objective #3 (Apply appropriate punctuation to all types of sentences and expressions) and #8 (Apply appropriate capitalization and number expression rules) and #9 (Apply basic spelling rules and use mnemonic devices) and #10 (Assess all types of business documents for needed editing).

SLO #2 aligns with Department Learning Outcome #1 (Students will communicate effectively through appropriate modes of communication (listening, speaking, reading, writing) as they pertain to the business environment with emphasis on the use of computer technology).

SLO #3

Students will demonstrate the ability to compose grammatically correct short informal business messages.

SLO #3 aligns with Course Objective #7 (Compose coherent business paragraphs).

SLO #3 aligns with Department Learning Outcome #1 (Students will communicate effectively through appropriate modes of communication (listening, speaking, reading, writing) as they pertain to the business environment with emphasis on the use of computer technology) and #2 (Students will analyze data to determine relevant information needed to produce reports, visual presentations and other business documents).

ASSESSMENT

Student learning outcomes #1 and #2 will be assessed with an exam item that asks them to correctly rewrite a two-paragraph business message that contains sentence faults and other errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and number usage. Student learning outcome #3 will be assessed with an assignment that requires them to compose a short informational business memo or e-mail with given factual data.
