GRADING POLICY

Assignments are weighted to reflect their importance. For example, writing and quizzes are worth morethan routine homework. Formal essays and unit tests are worth more than quizzes and writing. Students will be informed of the weight of individual assignments. Formal essay grading is done according to a rubric which is issued at the time the assignment is made.

In addition to the weighting, marking period grades with be calculated as follows:

45% = Major Tests and Essays (usually weighted 4X)

30% = Quizzes, Writing assignments (weighted 1X, 2X or 3X)

15% = Routine homework and exercises (weighted 1X)

10% = Participation (Daily points 2X; Graded discussions 1X)

Class participation is based on preparedness, punctuality and participation in class discussion. Students should come to class on time, with necessary tools (English notebook, pen and pencil, and text currently being studied). Students also need to be prepared to engage in discussion—asking meaningful questions, willing to offer insights and responding to the insights of others with thoughtfulness and tolerance. Occasionally there will be graded discussions.

Extra credit may be offered, infrequently and on a class-wide basis only.

Policies Affecting Grading:

All assignments are due on the date specified at the beginning of the class period. Late homework is NOT accepted.

Only major essays and projects will be accepted late. Ten percent will be deducted for each day such an assignment is late.

All written assignments must be typed, unless otherwise directed.

Absences:

When a student is absent, she is responsible for missed work. A syllabus will be provided with major assignments and due dates. When a student is absent on a due date, the work is due the day she returns. It is the student’s responsibility to turn in any work due or obtain any work assigned during an absence on the day he returns.

Students who are absent for tests or quizzes must make them up in the Reading/Writing Lab (room 106). Tests must be made up within one week of return from absence (unless an alternate arrangement is made) or grades for missed tests will automatically convert to a 0.

Students who cut class will automatically receive a grade of 0 on the missed exams or assignments due that day.

Cheating:

Cheating on tests or assignments will not be tolerated. Submitting work done by others as your own, allowing others to submit your work as theirs, plagiarizing from an outside source (including internet sites), “sharing” answers on homework, or cheating on a test or quiz will result in a zero. All students received and signed a copy of the plagiarism policy freshman year—it is still in effect!

Reading Schedules

Reading schedules will be issued for all major works. It is essential that students read thoroughly andkeep up with the schedule. Frequently annotation will be required. Quizzes or writing assignments may be given at any time over material read, according to the schedule—Quizzes will not be limited to information on study guides, but will cover material that was assigned to be read.

General Rules:

  • a place to take notes
