MD/ MBA Dual Degree
A partnership between the University of Texas Medical School and the University of Houston Clear Lake School of Business


Purpose: The MD/ MBA dual degree program is designed to prepare students to compete and succeed in a changing health care environment.

Curriculum: The prototype course schedule for the MD/MBA provides a recommended course sequence for students to successfully earn a MD/ MBA in 5 years. Shared credit hours, summer coursework, and online class availability allow students the necessary flexibility to couple their medical school education with highly sought business acumen.

1.  What is the degree granting institution for the MBA?

The UT Medical School at Houston has partnered with the University of Houston Clear Lake to offer the MBA degree. The University of Houston Clear Lake will grant the MBA degree.

2.  Am I allowed to enroll in the MBA if I am a current UT Medical Student?

New and current students are both eligible to enroll in the University of Houston Clear Lake MBA program. The prototype curriculum is designed for incoming students who can take 3 courses (9 credit hours) prior to beginning Medical School. Existing students will need to work with their UT Medical School academic advisor and the University of Houston Clear Lake academic advisor to determine the best sequencing of courses.

3.  Do I have to graduate from the MBA program at the same time or before I graduate from Medical School?

The MBA does not need to be completed prior to completing Medical School. Existing students may find it takes a year or two post Medical School to complete the degree requirements.

5.  What is the admission process for the MBA?

Apply online through the www.applytexas.org link.

Then, send an e-mail to Kathleen Williamson at including your name and application number so the application process can be facilitated according to the agreement between the schools.

6.  How can I avoid paying registration and admission fees at UHCL?
UH-Clear Lake has only one fee – an application fee of $45.00.

Currently, that fee may be waived by attending an Open House at the University of Houston Clear Lake TMC campus or at the University of Houston Clear Lake main campus and applying at that time. The dates vary each semester and will be publicized.

7.  Is there financial aid/ scholarship opportunities for the MBA?
The University of Houston Clear Lake offers competitive scholarships to their students. UT Medical School students are eligible to apply for the University of Houston Clear Lake scholarships. For more information on scholarships see:

8.  How do I transfer shared credit courses/ hours from UT Medical School to UHCL?
Please request that the UT Medical School Registrar’s Office send a transcript to the University of Houston Clear Lake Office of Admissions, once all the transfer courses have been completed.

9.  How much does the MBA degree cost?
The University of Houston Clear Lake MBA degree is competitively priced. As of January 2014, the following prices apply:

1 course (3 credit hours) = $1,374
2 courses (6 credit hours) = $2,676
3 courses (9 credit hours) = $3,873

10. Are the MBA courses available online?
Yes, the University of Houston Clear Lake offers all of the MBA courses online as well as face to face. Most of the face to face courses are only offered at the Clear Lake campus. However, some of the healthcare specific courses included in the MBA curriculum are offered in the Texas Medical Center.
