I can recognize accent marks and understand how they change meaning and sounds of French words.

ACCENT MARKS: In French, accent marks change the pronunciation and sometimes the meaning. They are part of the spelling of the word and cannot be left out.

Aigu (é) : makes e sound like ay

a.b.c.

Grave (è) : makes e sound like eh and can change the meaning of other words

a.b.c.

Tréma (ö): pronounce both vowels

a.b.c.

Circonflexe (ô) : word had an s in old French. When you put the s back into the spelling, it helps you figure out the meaning of the word.

a.b.c.

Cedille: (ç) makes c have an s sound

a.b.c.

.

8.I can count from 0-70 in French.

0 zéro (zayro)10 dix (dees)

1 un(uhn)11 onze

2 deux(duh)12 douze (dooz)

3 trois (twah)13 treize (trez)

4 quatre (cat)14 quatorze (katorz)

5 cinq(sank)15 quinze (canz)

22 vingt-deux32 trente-deux 42quarante-deux

23 vingt-trois37 trente-sept 48 quarante-huit

50 cinquante (sankahnt) 60 soixante (swasahnt) 70 soixante-dix

51cinquante-et-un61 soixante-et-un

Tips for learning the numbers:

1.Practice counting as much as you can: in order, by 5’s, by 10’s, backwards

2.Remember: You are not really learning 70 numbers! Use what you know to recombine the numbers.

3.The «z» sound is like «teen» in English. Compare: trois (3) and treize (13) quatre (4) and quatorze (14)

4.The families have similar sounds: cinq (5), quinze (15), cinquante (50). Check out the others for yourself!

Fun number fact: to get your shoe size in French, add 31 to your size. For example, I wear an 11. My French shoe size is 42. What is your shoe size in French?
