Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome back to the start of a very exciting term. We have many action packed activities and learning experiences for all our children this term. This newsletter is to inform you of relevant information, organisation and expectations for the children in Room 11 and our Syndicate.

Topics and activities

For our inquiry learning this term the syndicate will be working on the curriculum area of science. For this the children will be concentrating on learning about the physical sciences especially forces. They will then use this and other information to construct their very own roller coasters. Keep an eye on the blog to see some of the amazing designs next term.

Numeracy Programme

The children will be working on multiplication and division; basic facts and measurement. In measurement the children will be applying their knowledge to the roller coaster construction. It is also crucial that the children learn at least the 0,1,2,5 and 10 times tables at home.

Literacy Programme

This term the children will be concentrating on poems and explanatory writing. In poetry, the children will learn about New Zealand’s involvement in the First World War, then write a poem remembering ANZAC Day. In explanatory writing, the children will learn to deliver information about an issue, subject, method, or idea.

Reports

The children who didn’t receive their anniversary reports in Term 1 will receive their reports on the 9th June which will show you the children’s progress and achievements.

Learning Conferences

Learning conferences will be on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd of June, giving you the chance to see your child's improvement over the year. There will also be the opportunity for your child to talk and show you their work and let them tell you about their learning pathways.

Homework

It is really important to encourage your child to read every night. We are running a reading chart, where every night a book is read your child will receive a sticker. You are welcome to come in and look at the chart. They will also receive a piece of writing and maths on Fridays. The homework will also be on the class blog

Swimming and Taekwondo

As in the previous years, we will have our syndicate going for swimming lessons this term on Mondays and Wednesdays from 15/05/17 to 14/06/17. Students need to be prepared for the sessions, by bringing togs, a towel, a plastic bag for their wet things, a water bottle and a raincoat in case it rains.

We have also been given the opportunity for the children to try Taekwondo, where they will learn basic self-defence skills
