Torah - Gen 12 and 13

Elohim calls Abram, and blesses him with a promise of Meshiach

1 Now YHVH had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: Acts 7:3; Heb 11:8; 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. Gen 18:18; Gen 22:18; Gen 26:4; Acts 3:25; Gal 3:8;

He departs with Lot from Haran, and comes to Canaan

4 So Abram departed, as YHVH had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram [was] seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. 5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. Acts 7:4;

He journeys through Canaan

6 And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite [was] then in the land. Gen 10:18-19; Gen 13:7;

which is promised to him in a vision

7 And YHVH appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto YHVH, who appeared unto him. Gen 13:15; Gen 15:18; Gen 17:8; Gen 24:7; Gen 26:4; Deut 34:4; 8 And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, [having] Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto YHVH, and called upon the name of YHVH. 9 And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.1

He is driven by famine into Egypt

10 And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine [was] grievous in the land.

Fear makes him feign his wife to be his sister

11 And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou [art] a fair woman to look upon: 12 Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This [is] his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. 13 Say, I pray thee, thou [art] my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee. Gen 20:12; Gen 26:7;

Pharaoh, having taken her from him, by plagues is compelled to restore her

14 And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she [was] very fair. 15 The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house. 16 And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels. 17 And YHVH plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife. Ps 105:14;

He reproves Abram, whom he dismisses

18 And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What [is] this [that] thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she [was] thy wife? 19 Why saidst thou, She [is] my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take [her], and go thy way. 20 And Pharaoh commanded [his] men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.

Abram and Lot return with great riches out of Egypt

13:1 And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south. 2 And Abram [was] very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. 3 And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai; Gen 12:8; 4 Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of YHVH. Gen 4:26; Gen 12:8;

5 And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.

Strife arises between Abram's herdsmen and those of Lot

6 And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together. Gen 36:7; 7 And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land. Gen 12:6;

Abram meekly refers it to Lot to choose his part of the country

8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we [be] brethren.1 9 [Is] not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if [thou wilt take] the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if [thou depart] to the right hand, then I will go to the left. Gen 20:15; Gen 34:10;

and Lot goes to Sodom

10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it [was] well watered every where, before YHVH destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, [even] as the garden of YHVH, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. 11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. 12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched [his] tent toward Sodom. 13 But the men of Sodom [were] wicked and sinners before YHVH exceedingly. Gen 18:20; Ezek 16:49;

Elohim renews the promise to Abram

14 And YHVH said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: 15 For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. Gen 12:7; Gen 15:7; Gen 15:18; Gen 17:8; Gen 26:4; Deut 34:4; Acts 7:5; 16 And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, [then] shall thy seed also be numbered. Gen 15:5; Gen 17:4; Deut 10:22; Jer 33:22; Rom 4:17-18; Heb 11:12; 17 Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.

He removes to Hebron, and there builds an altar

18 Then Abram removed [his] tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which [is] in Hebron, and built there an altar unto YHVH.2 Gen 14:13;

Haftorah - Jos 24:3-18

A brief history of Elohim's benefits, from Terah

3 And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac. Gen 12:1; Gen 21:2; 4 And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt. Gen 25:24; Gen 36:8; Gen 46:1; 5 I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out. Exod 3:10; Exod 12:37; 6 And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the Red sea. Exod 14:1; 7 And when they cried unto YHVH, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season. 8 And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you. Num 21:21; Num 21:33; 9 Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and warred against Israel, and sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you: Num 22:5; Deut 23:4; Judg 11:25; 10 But I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand. 11 And ye went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand. Josh 3:14; Josh 6:1; Josh 6:20; Josh 10:8; Josh 11:8; 12 And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, [even] the two kings of the Amorites; [but] not with thy sword, nor with thy bow. Exod 23:28; Deut 7:20; Ps 44:3; 13 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat. Deut 6:10-12;

He renews the covenant between them and Elohim

14 Now therefore fear YHVH, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye YHVH.

15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve YHVH, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that [were] on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve YHVH. 16 And the people answered and said, Elohim forbid that we should forsake YHVH, to serve other gods; 17 For YHVH our Elohim, he [it is] that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed: 18 And YHVH drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: [therefore] will we also serve YHVH; for he [is] our Elohim.

What faith is

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.1 2 For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of Elohim, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Gen 1:1; Ps 33:6; John 1:10; Eph 3:9; Col 1:16; Rom 4:17;

4 By faith Abel offered unto Elohim a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, Elohim testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.2 Gen 4:4; Matt 23:35; 5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because Elohim had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased Elohim. Gen 5:24;

Without faith we cannot please Elohim

6 But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to Elohim must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

The worthy fruits thereof in the fathers of old time

7 By faith Noah, being warned of Elohim of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.3 Gen 6:13; 8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. Gen 12:4; 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as [in] a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker [is] Elohim.

and that they live not in sin, who are so justified

20 I am crucified with Meshiach: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Meshiach liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of Elohim, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Gal 1:4; Eph 5:2; Titus 2:14; 21 I do not frustrate the grace of Elohim: for if righteousness [come] by the law, then Meshiach is dead in vain. Heb 7:11;

Brit - 2Ti 2:11
