ARTICLE I

Club Title: Learning Center – John Jay High School

ARTICLE II

Purpose: To assist students in the John Jay High School community seeking remediation through peer tutoring

ARTICLE III

Expectations: Tutors in the program will initiate contact with the requesting students and coordinate a schedule that will be mutually beneficial to both (student and tutor.) The tutor will determine the specific area of study needing to be addressed, schedule the tutoring session and structure the session in ways that will help the student gain a better understanding of the material and improve academically. It is the tutor’s responsibility to keep all appointments scheduled and behave in a professional, respectful manner at all times. As members of the tutoring team, you represent the academic excellence of John Jay and the integrity of the Learning Center Program.

ARTICLE IV

Meeting Schedule: The Learning Center as an organization is not structured to meet regularly as a group. Meetings will be scheduled between the individual tutor and the assigned student to be tutored. Room 197 in the John Jay Science wing will be available every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from 2:00pm to 3:30pm for the purpose of one-on-one tutoring.

ARTICLE V

Hierarchy and Structure: The structure of the Learning Center is such that NO Officers are required. The Advisor of the Center will act as facilitator, coordinating communication between the requesting students and the tutors. The tutors are expected to act in a professional, respectful manner as representatives of the John Jay community. When a student requests assistance they will initiate contact either in person or by e-mail. Their e-mail address will be sent to the prospective tutor and the tutor’s e-mail will be sent to the student. They will coordinate between themselves when is mutually beneficial to meet for tutoring service. The first ten hours of tutoring service is applicable to “Community Service Hours” for National Honor Society, Participation in Government and other organizations that may require community service time. After ten hours, the tutors are eligible to be paid $5/hr for any time accrued within the building after the initial 10 hours. At the end of the academic year, the appropriate paperwork will be submitted to the District Office so that those eligible students can be paid for their services. The time devoted to the Learning Center is applicable only to the current academic year; no hours may be carried over to the next academic year.
