Tullamore Harriers Stadium 21st June 2003
This annual fixture for the Intermediate age group was held on Saturday 21st June in Tullamore Harriers Stadium. It serves as an interprovincial competition as well as a trial for the Schools’ International, which this year will be held on 19th July in Leckwith Stadium, Cardiff.
It proved to be an excellent day’s sport with some great performances. The only record of the day came from Joseph’s Durkan, St. Muirdeach’s, Ballina in the 3000m Walk with 13.22.5. We had an excellent sprint double from Stephen Thompson, Cookstown HS and an impressive run from Sean Smith, Bailieboro CS, in the 3000m. The best performance of the day probably came from Luke Reynolds, Sullivan Upper School, in the 100m Hurdles where he ran 13.8 to beat the Schools’ Champion, Nigel O’Gorman, Scoil Ruain Killenaule.
There were some fine performances in the girls’ events as well. Orla Nugent, St Paul’s’ Greenhills won the 1500m in impressive style with a new PB of 4.39.7 , an exciting finish to the 80m Hurdles with Leona Byrne, St Leo’s Carlow edging out last year’s winner Stacey Mullan, Regent House and a fine win in the High Jump from Claire McNamara, Presentation Athenry with 1.71m.
Boys’ Athlete of the meet and winner of the Fr. Lonergan Trophy was Stephen Thompson, Cookstown HS, who had a double in the sprints.
Girl Athlete of the meeting and Fr Lonergan Trophy winner was Karen Healy, St Joseph’s Athboy, who produced excellent performances in the Hammer and Discus.
