No jewelry, gum/candy, hats (except outdoors) are allowed. Points will be deducted from the student’s final marking period grade when a student attends class unprepared according to the following scale: 5% points for the 1st and2nd unprepared, an additional 10% points for the 3rd and 4thunprepared and 20% for any additional unprepared. All deductions are accrued.

Attendance in Physical Education

Attendance is a critical factor for any subject area course; in physical education it is even more important that students attend class as a critical portion of their grade is predicated on their participation in class. Our policy for attendance is superseded by the LivingstonHigh School administrative policy set for all subject areas and in compliance with the requirements set forth for credit and graduation. Please see the LHS handbook for specific details and questions.

The following attendance issues are detailed to provide direction and to establish consistency in the department and for communicating student expectations.

Tardiness:

The student is accountable to change their clothing if they are tardy to class unless the PE Teacher, Administration, Guidance or Nurse excuses their tardiness. The student’s grade will be lowered accordingly if they are not able to dress out due to being tardy (see Preparation).

Truancy:

A student who is truant from class will lose all criteria points for that class period and is considered unprepared and absent. Three class truancies will result in course failure for the year. The policy in the Student Handbook states: “After the third cut of the same class, the grade level administrator will inform the parent that their child has failed the course “(WF)” (see LHS handbook).

Medical:

All students must change (prepare for class) and report to their teacher. For short-term illnesses (1day), the student will be expected to perform physical activity at the level that they are well enough to complete for that class period. Additionally, the student will complete the class period work in all other criteria areas. The student is required to deliver an excuse note from the parent at the beginning of class or the following day.

A student who is unable to perform physical activity will be required to report to the nurse and will be charged an absence.

For long-term illnesses, the student will be assigned to media center and complete an alternate assignment until the student recovers and is able to participate in physical activity. The student must provide the medical doctors note immediately which will be kept on file with the school Nurse.

Absences:

All students are required to follow the established attendance policy adopted by the Livingston Board of Education and as outlined in the LivingstonHigh School student handbook. The Student Handbook states: “All student absences, with the exception of those resulting from field trips, school activities, administrative prerogative or exclusion, and religious observances will be classified as chargeable absences from class. Chargeable absences will be applied toward the maximum number of allowable absences that a student may have during a marking period. A college visitation is a chargeable absence. The maximum number of chargeable absences during a marking period shall not exceed five. In addition to the marking period absence maximum, a student may not exceed a total of eighteen chargeable absences for a full year course, fourteen for Physical Education, nine for a semester course, and five for Health Education (see LHS handbook).
