1. Executive Director’s Reflection *
In yesterday’s Sixth Sunday of Easter’s Gospel from John 14 we heard the consoling message: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” Perhaps, of all the indicators of a healthy or stable spirituality, peace is the primary one. In the H.O.P.E. spiritual assessment tool, “H” explores the sources of several qualities. One of those qualities is peace. In some respects, our spiritual care ministry, more than other ministries, lives out and bears this gift of peace as a core outcome of ministry. Thank you for being bearers of peace with patients, families, residents, staff, colleagues, inmates, and one another.
Given the many shifts in our personal and ministerial lives, as well as the working milieu within which we live our chaplaincy profession, peace might be far down on our list of daily spiritual fruits, while “troubled” and “afraid” are the hovering and harassing emotions. All the more so, peace is the gift to respective Paschal mysteries: we will be healing instruments of God’s Peace… Read more >
2. NACC Staff will be engaged in WebLink training *
This week the NACC staff asks your patience with replies to requests. The entire staff is going to be engaged in WebLink training. WebLink (www.weblinkinternational.com) is the integrated information management system that will help us integrate into one platform our database, website, finances, events, and communications with the aim to make it easier and more efficient for you, our NACC members, to renew and update membership, register for events, communicate with one another, access information and resources helpful to you, and more. So during this week, if you email a staff member or call our office, most likely you will get an out-of-office message. Thank you in advance for your patience.

7. 2013 National Conference’s Silent Auction raised $1,065 for scholarships *
We are grateful to all our members who donated items for the 2013 Silent Auction and for all who purchased the items. Thank you! We raised $1,065 for scholarships. Past monies raised for scholarship monies, both through the Silent Auction and from those who designated giving for this purpose on their registration form, have helped us to give either up to 15 full or partial scholarships for the Conference Fee. This yearly generous giving has been so helpful for us to help other members.
8. 2013 Conference resources can be accessed on the NACC website. *
Whether you participated in the 2013 National Conference or not, you can access the support materials and PowerPoints for many of the workshops on our NACC website at www.nacc.org/conference/2013materials.aspx.
9. We are deeply grateful to our 2013 Conference sponsors!
The ability to keep the conference fees reasonable relies very much on the willingness and generosity of a variety of sponsors. We received nearly $37,000 in sponsorships. We are deeply grateful. To view the sponsors, please go to www.nacc.org/conference/default.aspx#sponsors

12. National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care announces CPG Third Edition *

This document incorporates important quality assessment and improvement initiatives into palliative care, and described the comprehensive care necessary for patients at end of life. 13. Training Opportunity in Interprofessional Spiritual Care of Cancer Patients *
The George Washington University Medical School’s Institute on Spirituality and Health (GWish) is submitting a training grant application to the National Cancer Institute. The proposed training program, Integrating Spirituality into Education Curriculum for Oncology Clinicians (ISPEC), will train interdisciplinary health care teams (comprising physicians, nurses and chaplains from NCI-affiliated and community cancer centers) in the identification and care of patients’ spiritual needs as an integral part of effective distress management and palliative care. Chaplains are considered key to the identification and formation of two or three-person interdisciplinary teams to attend the 2-3 day in-person training workshops to be conducted at GW. GWish has asked George Handzo (and he asked if NACC could participate) to conduct an informal poll of chaplains working in cancer centers to determine the level of interest chaplains will have in this training and the likelihood that they will take the initiative to 1) identify representatives from one or two of the other professions (medicine and nursing) and 2) seek institutional agreement for this team to participate in the training. There will be no fee for attending; hotel accommodations will be paid for; and participants will receive $500 toward travel costs. If you have a few moments now, please answer the questions in the survey in the link attached. The proposal is to be submitted to NCI in mid-May.
