Summer Reading Assignment 2017 Entering 6th Grade
Students are required to read and fully comprehend two books this summer and take an AR test on each in the first week of school. Students must read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and answer three of the following questions. The answer to each question must be written in a separate paragraph (3 total paragraphs) with a minimum of 5 sentences (a minimum of 15 total sentences). The work should be completed on loose leaf paper and turned in on the first day of school.
1. Explain how the fictional characters and events in this story are similar to or different from real people and events you know. Use evidence from the book to support your answer.
2. Explain how the main character changes from the beginning of the story to the end. Use evidence from the book to prove your answer.
3. Explain the theme or moral of the book. Use details from the book to support your answer.
4. Explain how the setting is important to the story? How might the story be different if its time or its place were different? Cite evidence from the story to support your answer.
**Students will write a character analysis essay on the main character in Hatchet in the first nine weeks of
school, so reading it too early in the summer is not advised. Also, as you are reading the book, you will want
to notice the main character’s traits, or qualities, throughout it. On a separate sheet of paper, you might even
want to jot down at least three important traits and the pages which include evidence that can be used
to prove the traits.
The second book must be a book selected from the list below.
