Fundamental physical testing of rattle
Background
At Volvo Car’s Research & Development you will be a contributor to the next generationoutstanding premium cars from Volvo, together with other engineers around the world by creating innovative human-centric car technology that makes life lesscomplicated and more enjoyable for people.
Solidity as an important attribute within User experience and Craftsmanship Centre,is responsible for Squeak&Rattle and Solid Feeling requirements, verification and follow-up from early phases untilend of production. One of our major challenges is to improveour competence for attribute verification in early phases to meet shorter time plans with reduced number ofphysical complete vehicle prototypes. And of course, absence of Squeak & Rattle (S&R) is a must for premium cars.
Scope
Rattle is the sound that can occur when adjacent parts collide. A car that is making rattle sounds due to interior parts colliding, for example when driving on an uneven road, is considered quality deficient. Volvo Cars is moving towards virtual product development, meaning, every quality aspects need to be evaluated using simulation up front. To virtually evaluate new concepts for rattle, there is a need to better understand the conditions for when impact between parts is causing audible rattle. This thesis work is part of a long term goal to define an objective rattle risk metric that is suitable to use in virtual simulations. Parameters of interest include both excitation signal parameters like frequency of impacts, impact duration and velocity at impact and the specimen setup like material, geometry, gap etc.
Content
●Literature studies of previous experiments on rattle evaluation.
●Design a setup (rig) for basic rattle testing in cooperation with Volvo Cars experts. For example a vibrating cantilever beam against a stationary hammer.
●Validate the physical setup by Eigen mode simulation (FEM).
●Set up a Design of Experiments (DOE)of identified sources of rattle.
●Perform rattle measurements.
●Analyzeexperimentaldata.
●Suggest and evaluate potential for improvements.
●Write master thesis report
Goals
●Create astripped down experimental setup for rattle evaluation.
●Identify parameters that are influencing rattle.
Desired skills
●Hands on or interested in Lab work
●Statistical analysis knowledge
●Familiarity with FEM (preferably eigen mode analysis) is meritorious
●Knowledge in signal processing is a plus not a requirement
Means
Office, computer and software will be arranged by Volvo Cars or Chalmers.
