Job Title:Youth Haven Senior Worker

Responsible To:Youth Haven Service Manager

Annual Salary: £26,487 (pro-rata 18 hrs = £13,621)

Hours of Employment: 18 hrs per week Tue; Wed & Thurs (including evenings)

Annual Leave: /

5 weeks per annum (including 1 week over Christmas)

Youth Venue:

The Haven is a purpose built youth facility with dance & recording studios, community radio station, ‘cafe’ area & access to flood lit sports facility. The project aims to deliver a diverse range of services to young people aged 13 – 19 years, including volunteering opportunities, transitions into employment and IAG support.

Purpose of Post:

To support the Youth Haven Service Manager with the redesign & re-launch of Youth Haven Project and other youth related programmes delivered by the Castlehaven Community Association e.g.: Live! Academy, enterprise development and IAG support programme. This will include supporting & maintaining quality assurance systems, and ensuring the delivery of a diverse programme of activities.

The Person:

You will be passionate about and committed to the delivery of quality services to young people. You will come with previous experience of youth service delivery in a multi cultural inner city area. You will have extensive experience & a clear understanding of what engages & motivates young people. You will be multi skilled, confident and experienced in both one-to-one and group work. You will be familiar with the use of social media as an engagement tool.

Main Duties Will Be:

  1. To support & deputise for the Youth Haven Project manager.
  1. To enthuse, encourage and enable young people to achieve their unique potential as independent individuals through acknowledgement, encouragement, understanding, and personalised attention.
  2. To recognise the impact of social media on youth work delivery and harness it as an engagement tool.
  1. To be aware of service targets and outcomes and ensure that the servicesdelivered make a positive contribution to achieving them.
  1. To ensure that all staff and volunteers are responsible for taking positive actions to safeguard young people they come into contact with, and follow policies and procedures around safeguarding appropriate to their level of post.
  1. To maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job, participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.
  1. To develop and maintain a youth work programme which reflects the expressed needs and enthusiasms of the group.
  1. To facilitate arts-based activities, community/environmental projects, outdoor education, sporting and other activities.
  1. To manage and maintain youth and community project resources.
  1. Assessing the needs of young people, and planning and delivering programmes related to areas such as health, fitness, smoking, drugs, relationships and bullying.
  1. Mentoring and supporting individuals to encourage social inclusion.
  1. To undertake administrative tasks, verifying information and responding to project queries.
  1. Fulfil any other duties appropriate to this role to secure quality & integrity of the project & of the Castlehaven Community Association.

Additional Roles May Include:

  1. To meet, liaise and network with Police, educational establishments, social services, and other agencies to address issues and promote opportunities for young people.
  1. To work with partners &/or potential employers to maximise career opportunities for young people
  1. To work with parents and community groups to win support for improved provision and acting as an advocate for young people’s interests.

Person Specification

The Ideal Candidate Will:

  1. Have a passion & enthusiasm for and commitment to the success of quality youth provision in an urban setting.
  2. Have gained a recognised qualification in youth &/or community work.
  3. Have a minimum of 2 years of youth work delivery in an inner city setting.
  4. Have experience of working with disadvantaged young people.
  5. Have a proven track record of developing projects in the public, private or voluntary sectors.
  6. Have an understanding of monitoring and evaluation systems and practices.
  7. Have a good working experience of working in a multi-agency environment.
  8. Have a high level of verbal and written communication skills.
  9. Have proven experience of IT in the working environment.
  10. Have experience in the use of social media as an engagement tool.
  11. Have strong organisation and planning skills.
  12. Have an ability to handle sensitive issues with tact, diplomacy and confidentiality.

Desired But Not Essential:

1. Experience of working with young people with special needs/disabilities.

2.To be first aid trained.
