family news

By the grace of God, we have just passed the 2nd anniversary in our marriage. At the end of our first anniversary, we were challenged by His love and holiness to be covenanted to desire and grow deeper in love with one another.

The Lord has then blessed us with our baby daughter, Joey Ooi, that our lives through the covenant made, may be sanctified. She was born on 13th April 2002 atBaltimore, MD.

This little missionary will arrive in Cambodiawith her parents on 27th June 2002. May the Lord be gracious and merciful to raise this child that she will keep increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Our ministry in Cambodia is also coming to 2 years. It has been an abundantly blessed ministry, full of His grace with many challenges in our faith. We have the privilege to witness many university students come to the Lord, thus being discipled and equipped as future national leaders.

The Crossroads Boyz[all who lived in the dormitory] are progressively growing in their faith. Besides the daily worship and leadership program, they are participating in one body to learn in serving one another. They are also aware and personally desire to be responsible for the Great Commission entrusted upon them.

Girls’ dormitory

The Girls’ Dormitory will commence in July 2002 after a 2 years wait. In the past, girls would give up their pursuit of educationdue to social and cultural prohibition. As the society opens up, and also more girls are coming to the capital city to further their university education, CNEC will meet their needs of lodging with a view of winning them for Christ. We pray that the ministry philosophy, life-influence-life, will change and transform these girls to be light and salt in Cambodia.

Our strategy is to rent a house and begin with an intake of 3-4 girls. They will fellowship with the Crossroads Boyz, worshipping, studying the word of God, and to develop leadership characteristics together. We pray that the Lord will increase them in numbers that a godly community of Christ, the church, would be established in the city. Please pray for a lady co-worker to be the house guardian. May the Lord send us a godly lady to live in the midst of these young girls.

New members

On 30th December 2001, we had our worship by a public swimming pool in town. Kyounghee, Phallyn and Sarom [back row, 2nd to 4th from right] were then baptized d added to the church. Both Phallyn and Sarom were students taken into the Crossroads in July 2001, accepted Christ, attended baptism class and were discipled by older students from the Crossroads.

Kyounghee, a Korean and friend of ours residing in Cambodia, came to know the Lord after her relationship with Moonjung went on for more than a year. Due to Kyounghee’e resentment about Christianity, Moonjung was very sensitive and particularly not pushy about the gospel and church. Through God’s guidance in the friendship, Moonjung had prayerfully influenced Kyounghee in life purpose and values, which the latter was subsequently won over and assured of her salvation. Kyounghee is now an active Christian enjoying in sharing her faith with people around her.

Noreak[front row, 2nd from left], Sochea[above Noreak] and Thong[leaning on guitar] came to Crossroads on 18th December 2001. They have also accepted Christ recently and will be baptized in July 2002.

Please pray for these young men that their faith will be rooted in Christ. Please also pray for the new intake on 31st May 2002. By the grace of the Lord, the foundation of ministry in the Crossroads has been established. May the new students and even students from future intake come to know the Lord and be His instrument to complete His work of redemption in Cambodia.

theological education by extension[tee]

TEE is a theological program designed in pastoral training for church leaders where training is not convenient due to geographical reason. It is usually used in remote areas to equip lay leaders in theological education via church planting. By the grace of God, TEE has granted permission to CNEC to adapt the program to equip students in university in order to be future Christian leaders. 9 of the Crossroads Boyz are currently going through the 3 years program.

university christian students movement

On 14th March 2002, CNEC has urged various mission organizations to form a partnership in student ministry. It was unanimously agreed and a committee was set up to for the purpose of gathering all university Christian students to meet on a regular basis. The objective is to form a vehicle for university students to take on ownership and be envisioned to lead and mobilize Christian students to proclaim the message that the ‘Kingdom is at hand’. Please pray for the following:-

  • Unity of Christian mission organization, local Christian leaders and university students that Christ be known and be made known.
  • License from the Cambodian government for a regular meeting and fellowship.
  • Wisdom, vision and discernment for the appointed committee to plan and envision, and to challenge university students to take up theirCross to bear leadership responsibility for such movement.

The Crossroads Boyz will has been praying and equipping for this day to come since The Crossroads ministry started 2 years ago. Our vision to raise ‘Ezras’ to rebuild Cambodia has been honored by God. The boys have learned and witnessed how God has sent His own Son, Jesus Christ, to disciple the twelve to commission them into the world to proclaim His name. One of the Crossroads Boyz, Rotha[picin center], challenged the Crossroads – The 12 Disciples had changed the world, so can ‘the twleve’ at the Crossroads to change Cambodia.

Mobilizing professionals for world evangelization

CNEC’s vision is to use The Crossroads as a base for discipleship/leadership training and church planter training for world evangelization. By God’s guidance, The Crossroads has been an instrument to mobilize churches for world evangelization via mission team visit to Cambodia from various parts of the world. Short term members would be envisioned and equip to commit their lives to the Lord to serve faithfully in their own Jerusalem.

David’s passion is to help more professionals in participating in mission. It is his personal research and conviction that there are so many resources within the professionals group that has yet to be fully utilized for the Lord efficiently. His vision is shared by a few Christian Institutions. Through the Lord’s intervention, David proposed to SingaporeBibleCollege[SBC], one of the leading theological centers in the region of South East Asia, to use the Crossroads as an extension program for bible college students, particularly professionals in its graduate program. SBC has agreed and with effect of 1st January 2003, The Crossroads will be an on-field training center for SBC’s mission program in equipping its students for cross cultural training. We pray that through The Crossroads, more professionals will come to understand God’s calling and purpose for them in life.

Conclusion: We are thankful for the Lord’s faithfulness in blessing the ministry here. Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. Please uphold us in prayer, always.
