WBA Presidents Report for the 2014 – 2015 Season

This is my final report as President after 10 years in charge.

During the season we held the final WNBL game for the Link Lightning which was a huge success for the WBA, everyone that helped and the Whyalla community as whole. The effort was well worth the result.

It is very good to see our numbers reaching almost 1200 for the summer season, which represents around 5% of the Whyalla population playing our great game. This clearly shows that even though we still have a few issues here and there, we must be doing something right to be the most popular sport in town.

We are in a pretty good financial position, considering over the last few years we have replaced our floor(twice), roof and air-conditioning at around an outlay of around $500,000.00 and only getting a grant for $125,000.00 of it, speaks volumes for the committee and the band of helpers.

There is still work to do, with umpiring being a major issue and we need to continually work to improve and attract the right people. I would sincerely like to thank all the people who put their hands up to umpire, it is a thankless job.

Another band of helpers I must thank is the tribunal committee. This is the probably the hardest thing in our association to do. I would like to thank everyone that puts their time in to help us, Jim Vigar, Paul Trussel, Karen Kemp, Annette Barford, Greg Flannegan and Peter Boundy, and I hope I haven't missed anyone out.

I would also like to thank our gate keeps, Ken Benford on his 30 years’ service and early retirement, Keith Schroder for all his years’ service, and Cherish Medwin for coming on board just recently.

Without a good canteen we would die of thirst or go hungry, so thankfully Audrey, Jo, the Clarke family, the Campbell family and Tam make sure we don't. Audrey is always looking for helpers, so if you have any spare time, please let her know.

Lastly I would like to thank our Games Mangers, Pat Kemp, Heather Ledgard, Josh Clark, Darren Hoffman and also John Issom 4-5 hours every night.

Without all the people I have mentioned above, our association would not run as well as it does, and I thank them for their efforts last season and the seasons before. We have initiated being involved in the star club, and we need to make sure we continue to comply going forward for possible grants.

Overall the 2014 and 2015 was a good year for the WBA.

WBA Maintenance Report for the 2014 – 2015 Season

As we have no report for this I will give an overview of what we have completed this year.

We were able to have our roof changed and although there are still minor things to address, this has stopped us forfeiting games, and is protecting our new floor and puts us in a good position for the next 25 to 30 years.

The new air-conditioning has made this stadium a top class facility, which would be the envy of any other association with old buildings.

Dean Plane and Peter Boundy are doing a magnificent job resurfacing the seats and walls which had water damage, and this has changed the look of the surroundings dramatically, and has really enhanced the look inside our stadium.

Phil Sweeney and Darren Hoffman are always working hard completing the little jobs around the stadium the need attention, but no one ever notices that they are done, so I thank them both for this. These jobs mainly get done with the aid of the recycle money which they both, along with Dean Plane spend countless hours sorting them and taking them to the depot for money. The association cannot thank them enough for their efforts.

I would like to thank Jim Higgin’s for his efforts helping the WBA with all our plumbing issues.

Every time we have an electrical issue, Brian Quinn is there to help and offer good advice, and the WBA thanks him for his time and efforts.

There is always a number of people that are willing to help when asked Darren & Michael Quinn, Chris Calthorpethe, Andrew & Neil Higgins, Jim Woods, so I truly thank those people who have helped not only this year but in previous years under my tenure.

In the near future we need to address our reduction in power consumption and we can do this with new lighting, (costing approximately 30K), selling the freezer and purchasing better fridges and freezers, hopefully cost neutral, and the purchase of a new air-conditioner for the canteen.

We will only need to fix the walls and paint, and we should have a relatively low maintenance bill for 15 to 20 years.

As this is my last report, I would like to thank the following people whom I have thoroughly enjoyed working with as my time as President;

Vice President Darren Hoffmann – clearly the work that Darren puts into the WBA shows he has a clear passion and the WBA could not repay him enough for his diligence in making sure that we run as smoothly as possible, with the best systems we could have, and without Darren we would be a long way behind the eight ball.

Treasurer and Secretary Heather Ledgard – Heather has been able to manage our books so that we have be able to stay afloat over all these years as well as completing the amount of maintenance we have in the past few years. Heather has managed to keep me on the straight and narrow at the right times over my tenure and I am indebted to her for this.

Competition Organiser Pat Kemp – Pat has one of the most thankless tasks within the organisation. The amount of time and effort Pat puts in for the WBA clearly shows love for our game, and I cannot thank her enough for her efforts. I sincerely hope Pat can stay involved in some way for some time to come.

Junior/Combined committee rep Audrey Marks, who has done a wonderful effort for close to two decades, where most people move on after their kids have finished with combined Audrey has soldiered on.

The latest secretary has tried to make sure I'm organised and doing the things I'm supposed to do by asking me 24 hours a day have I done this, have I done that, you better get it done. They say behind every good man there is a better woman, so I thank Helen from me and the association over the last 3-4 years.

Well that wraps it up for me and my time as President, and I hope the WBA can continue to grow and prosper.

WBA Senior Committee Financial Report - April 2014 to March 2015

At the start of the financial period (April 2014) the WBA was in a sound financial position to undertake 2 major projects (re-roofing and air conditioning upgrade) after the re flooring project was finalised.

At the end of the financial period the senior committee experienced a loss of $37,110:37, driven by the roof repairs ($126,362:00) and the increased depreciation from the replacement of the air conditioning systems ($4,023:00). When added back and the Junior committee's contribution towards the air conditioning eliminated, the senior committee would have had an underlying profit of $81,274 which was up from the previous year ($62,699:00). The air conditioning unit’s replacement have been treated as asset purchases and should be expensed over their effective lives.

The audit report will be available, on the web site, once it becomes available. The approved budget will also be posted.
