Ms. Niles

Week 14

Monday 11/14/17

Subject / Health Sciences 1 Muscles of the body (excluding facial muscles, we already learned about them)
09.01- Apply medical terminology as related to the muscular system.
09.06- Apply knowledge of cells and tissues in the muscular system.
09.05- Discuss the interrelationship between calcium, ions and the muscular system
09.08- Describe a signal transmission across a myoneural junction
09.02- Discuss and describe the structure and function of the muscular system across the lifespan
09.03- Identify and explain the 3 main types of muscles and their implications
09.04- Interpret muscle function by examining attachment to bone
09.09- Identify and analyze common diseases and disorders of the muscular system including etiology, diagnosis, pathology, and treatments.
09.11- Demonstrate knowledge of skills related to the muscular system which may include isometric and isotonic contractions
Math Practice: Use numbers to describe situations. / Demonstrate an understanding of basic medical terminology, including prefixes, suffixes, and root words related to major body systems / Bellwork/agenda / We began class remembering all the different things we’ve already learned about related to muscles. (facial muscle structures and their functions, tendon structure and function, muscle insertion and origin, different types of muscle tissue including skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscles, plus peristalsis and smooth muscle).
Students used a diagram of muscles (anterior and posterior body view) to complete a muscles crossword puzzle. Students didn’t fill in the crossword puzzle, they figured out the answers to one and recreated it on paper. Then we went over it.
After students finished they completed an online activity to review body directional terms, including posterior, anterior, superior, inferior, distal, proximal, superficial, deep.
Objective / Students will explain how smooth muscle helps the body function better.
Essential Question / How does smooth muscle help the body function better?
Vocabulary / Smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, peristalsis
Accommodations / E1, E4,E18, E22, E24, T1, T2 on the Accommodations list / Ticket Out / Notes on student-driven/student ideas on the different types of muscle

Math Practice: Use numbers to describe situations. / Demonstrate an understanding of basic medical terminology, including prefixes, suffixes, and root words related to major body systems / Bellwork/agenda / We will begin class by passing back two assignments related to muscles and will go over one of them (the muscle contractions simplified worksheet, but we already went over the fill-in-the-blank muscles worksheet).
Students will also get back the work they finished yesterday.
Students will answer multiple choice questions in the Scott Fong text related to the muscular system
We will review Axial versus Appendicular skeleton by covering the model skeleton in pink sticky notes (the axial bones only).
Objective / Students will explain how smooth muscle helps the body function better.
Essential Question / How does smooth muscle help the body function better?
Vocabulary / Smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, peristalsis
Accommodations / E1, E4,E18, E22, E24, T1, T2 on the Accommodations list / Ticket Out / Corrected muscle contractions worksheet
