Post Master’s-DNP Program Form 5: Practicum Hours Log – Post Fall 2014

Office of Graduate Studies Page (1 of 2)

Purpose of Practicum Hours Log: To assist DNP students in keeping track of required practicum hours.

Policy:Practicum hours are obtained by infusing theory into practice through participation in DNP level practice experiences within a DNP course. Practicaexperiences enable the student to synthesize and demonstrate competency of the DNP Essentials (see page 2) and are acquired in a practice setting outside of the student’s current role in an organization.DNP students will complete 1,000 hours of post-baccalaureate (post-BS) practice as part of a supervised academic program.A post-master’s student must complete atleast 500 hours at the doctoral level in order to demonstrate doctoral competency. The total number of hours needed is dependent upon the number of practicum hours earned in a master’s program.

Procedure: Post-master’s students will need to provide documentation from their master’sprogram to substantiate the number of practicum hours earned.A maximum of 500 hours will be credited. The student will work with his/heradvisor to devise a plan of study to complete 1,000 post-BS practice hours. The student should update the log each semester and provide a copy to the advisor. During the semester of graduation, the student is responsible for providing a log of practicum hours to the advisor, obtaining advisor approval, and submitting the advisor-approved and signedPracticum Hours Log to the Director of the DNP Program along with the “Fulfillment of Course Requirements for DNP.”

Practicum hours are obtained as part of:

  • NDNP 808, 812, 813, 817, or 890 (Practicum Course) or as part of an elective that has a practicum component (students wishing to obtain practicum hours through an elective course must obtain pre-approval by the DNP Director).
  • 1 practicum credit = 45 hours

A student who follows the prescribed post-master’s DNP plan of study will accrue 495 practicum hours by graduation. Five hours are credited during the dissemination of the scholarly project. Therefore, a student entering the program with 500 hours will meet the 1000-hour requirement.Students entering the program with less than 500 clinical hours at the master’s level will need to supplement hours by taking additional practicum courses (NDNP 890).

Instructions: 1. Input brief description of hours

2. Indicate number of practicum hours.

3. Indicate which DNP Essential is met as a result of the practicum experience (see page 2).
