Count and Noncount Nouns, Some

Lesson Objectives:

·  To identify foods

·  To identify, say, and write the plurals for some food words

·  To tell how many food items one wants

·  To say and write noncount nouns that do not have a plural form

·  To use the quantifier some for noncount food items

·  To use a number to tell how many of a food item they want

·  To use there is and there are for count and noncount food items

Classroom English:

Find. Say. Circle. Color. Draw. Write. Show me. What do you want? What do you like? Do you like (onions)?

Language Patterns:

·  I want a (tomato).

·  I want an (orange).

·  I want (four) (carrots).

·  I want (two) mangoes.

·  I want some (chicken).

Materials:

Crayons; markers; drawing paper; scissors; tape; paper plates; plastic spoons or plastic forks; napkins; play money; lunch bags; scrambled words on index cards: drbea (bread), trcaro (carrot), hcesee (cheese), hiciekn (chicken), ifhs (fish), nmaog (mango), onion (onion), aorneg (orange), opttao (potato), crie (rice), puos (soup), otmoat (tomato), twaer (water); multiple copies of Picture Cards; template for hour and minute hands for clocks; game boards prepared with poster board; index cards with numerals 0,1,2 written three times each.

Lesson Plan for Spin! B, Unit 7

Into Activities

Warm-up/Accessing prior knowledge (10 minutes)

Welcome the class. Show the students the Picture Cards for chicken, soup, cheese, tomato, potato, carrot, onion, rice, bread, mango, orange, and water. Ask student to repeat the new words as you say each one. Play a Show Me game with the students. Place all the Picture Cards on the board, floor, or table in front of the students. Continue with the Warming Up activities on pg. 63.

Through Activities

Page 63 Student Book (10 minutes)

Have the students open their books to page 63. Play the recording and point to each word as it is said. Allow students to talk about the pictures and encourage them to identify the food items. Follow the instructions for Using Page 63. You will need the cassette recorder for this activity.

Page 64 Student Book (10 minutes)

Help students find page 64 in their books. Play the recording as you point to the singular and plural food words. Explain the many plural nouns in English end in

–s (carrots, onions). Others end in –es (tomatoes, potatoes)

Page 64 Teacher’s Guide (15 minutes)

Do Having Fun: A Listening Game. Place multiple copies of the following Picture Cards on the board: tomato, potato, carrot, mango, and orange. Ask students to identify each one and then ask them to say the plural forms as you hold up more than one of each food. With students at a higher level of language proficiency, ask them to talk about the plural forms in a sentence.

Page 65 Student Book (10 minutes)

Follow the directions for Using Page 65 of the Teacher’s Guide. Play the recording. Explain that some nouns in English are usually not counted. Point out that we do not use a number before a noun we cannot count. Continue with the remainder of the instructions for Using Page 65. You will need a cassette recorder for this activity.

Page 66 Student Book (10 minutes)

Help students find page 66 in their books. Read the directions for the Exercise and ask student to identify each food. Follow the rest of the directions for Using Page 66 and help students complete the page in their books.

Page 66 Teacher’s Guide (15 minutes)

Do Having Fun! Play Store on pg. 66 of the Teacher’s Guide. Use real foods if possible or the food picture cards for this game. Provide play money and lunch bags to put the food in. Follow the rest of the directions for Play Store on pg. 66.

Page 67 Student Book/Teacher’s Guide (10 minutes)

Do Warming Up on pg. 67. Use multiple copies of the Picture Cards. Write the words There is on the board to form one column. Write the words There are on the board to form a second column. Continue with the rest of the directions on pg. 67.

Page 67 Teacher’s Guide (10 minutes)

Help student turn the pages in their books to page 67. Do Using Page 67. Play the recording and explain that we use the word some with plural nouns and noncount nouns.

Page 68 Student Book: (10 minutes) Do the Using Page 68 activities in the Teacher’s Guide page 68. Help students find page 68 in their books. Ask students to identify each food item on the page

Page 68 Teacher’s Guide (15 minutes)

Do Having Fun! Following Directions on pg. 68. Give each student a piece of drawing paper and show them how to draw a large table in the center of the page. Follow the remainder of the directions for Following Directions.

Page 69 Teacher’s Guide (10 minutes)

Review vocabulary from the unit by showing students the Picture Cards and asking them to identify the food words. Continue with the remainder of the instructions for Warming Up on pg. 69.

Page 69 Student Book (10 minutes)

Have students look at page 69 and model the pronunciation of the words. Play the recording and point to each word of the chant as you hear it. Continue with the remainder of the instructions for Using Page 69. You will need a cassette recorder for this activity.

Page 70 Teacher’s Guide/Student Book (15 minutes)

Help students find page 70 in their books. Ask students to identify the food items pictured there and to read each corresponding word. Continue with the remainder of the instructions for Using Page 70.
