Access to TRMM Images and Data Files

Activity 3

NASA Remote Sensing Training

GEO Workshop, Cartagena, November 28-29, 2011

In this exercise we will explore three websites for access to NASA TRMM images and data files

Part I: Access to Near Real Time TRMM Data and Images

1)Go to:

2)To learn how to use this website go to your CD and open the file: “TRMM_Tools.pdf”.

You can also find this presentation at , then go to the “Visualization and Analysis” Tab, and open the file TRMM_Tools.pdf.

3)In the main page, select the map for “Global Flood and Landslide Monitoring”

Here you can obtain maps for Current Heavy Rain, Flood, and Landslide Estimates. Click on any map of interest.

4)To visualize today’s flood potential on Google Earth, go to the section below the maps and open the following file with Google Earth:

5)Are there any areas in your country that have a Low, Medium or High Flood potential ?

Part II: SERVIR Mesoamerica : Access to Near Real Time TRMM Data

1)Go to:

2)Go to “Interactive Web Maps” and select “Mesoamerica”

3)To view today’s Rainfall from TRMM:

Go to “Weather” and then “TRMM Rainfall”, and then select Rainfall, Latest 3-Hour Estimate

You will be able to visualize TRMM over Mesoamerica

To View TRMM over South America click and drag the map.

You can also add other layers. Some layers are only available for Mesoamerica

Part III: Access to TRMM Data Files via Mirador

To learn how to use Mirador, open this presentation in your CD:

NASA_Satellite_Data_Access_Mirador_Colombia2011.ppt

1)Follow the instructions to search for TRMM or other data of interest.

2)Try doing a spatial and temporal subset of the data

You can also search for TRMM Data files at:

1)Select “Gridded” or other data product

2)In the next page, at the top right corner of the table select “Spatial and Temporal Search”

3)Make a selection for the dates you want

4)Make a spatial selection by drawing a box in the area of interest

5)Select the product you want, and then at the bottom of the page click on “Search GES DISC”

6)You will get a list of data files in several different formats.

7)Try saving the file to your computer or uploading it to Google Earth (choose KMZ).
