1. What is the role of the Chief’s Mess?

  • Engage junior members and support JO’s
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities since we have “earned our way” to the position
  • Serve as a network to handle issues as they arise and provide leadership at the deckplate level
  • Provide mentoring and enforce the standards
  • On a cutter, provide immediate resolution in an informal way.
  • Networking for your E-7 - Great place for JO's to learn or bounce advice/ideas through.

2. What do you recommend JO’s do to develop a relationship with the Chief’s Mess?

  • Being a “know it all is bad” – severs relationship from the start
  • Have an open mind and be willing to listen
  • Have a positive attitude and be seen
  • Get involved with morale events
  • Seek/welcome constructive feedback

3. Since senior enlisted have become progressively younger, what advice do you have for JO’s?

  • Since we are more mission oriented now, JO’s come in wanting to make things happen
  • Build trust with your senior enlisted
  • Form working groups that consist of JO’s and senior enlisted
  • Stay professional, we are not peers despite the close age proximity
  • This problem stems from promoting people who are not ready
  • Be specific about what a person needs to advance, it is ok to hold people back if they are not ready
  • You don’t have to always be the nice guy

4. How do you know someone is ready to be a chief?

  • Learnt personal knowledge on those you will have to recommend
  • Make sure they are ready to assume a huge leadership role
  • Members should not be surprised that they are not being recommended
  • Know the impact of your recommendation and be able to articulate it both up and down the chain
  • Weigh both the good and bad when making the decision – no one is perfect
  • Communicate expectations early and often so there is no confusion

5. What is the difference between managers and leaders?

  • People skills – a leader has strong ones.

6. What do all the recent changes to the organization mean? What are some good ones, bad ones?

  • Get on board with change because it is constant.
  • Work expectations and standards have become more lax – hold the standards
  • Quality of life is a lot better!
  • The CG expanded too quickly so folks are just “punching their ticket” instead of taking of taking ownership in their tasking
  • Doing business like the other services is a good thing
  • Officers don’t seem enthused about engaging the troops much – be visible, especially to outlying units

7. What are the main reasons junior enlisted get out of the service?

  • Not valued
  • Disrespected

8. What can officers do to help instill that sense of ownership in our subordinates?

  • Utilize the IDP system
  • Take care of your people, both personally and professionally
  • Perform work tasks with the junior folks sometimes – let them see you are on the same team
  • Use the mid-term making period as a way to provide feedback

9. What would you task us with today?

  • Challenge the senior enlisted and hold them accountable
  • Remember that there are no little things
  • Get involved with your unit and your people.

10. Advice on recommending vs not recommending for advancement.

  • Make sure it is not a surprise
  • hold mid-period counseling
  • don't let one flaw be the reason you don't recommend
  • provide feedback on what they can do to get recommended

11. What are some positive/negative aspects of CG since you joined?

  • Pos: We adapt to change well in the organization
  • Neg: Those that don't adapt slow us up w/progress
  • Pos: Time flies when you are having fun...have fun because our job is satisfying
  • Neg: Don't be the nice person all the time; ignoring small problems means you condone them.
  • Pos: QOL issues
  • Neg: quick advancements; stepping stone mentality vs this is my job; no sense of duty
  • Pos: Do business like other military services
  • Neg: Leaders get caught up in mission/no engagement w/troops
