Purpose of job

To provide care and support to service users with serious sight loss and additional disabilities and to supervise daily operations in the home.

Financial responsibility:

No budget responsibility

Decision making responsibility:

Understands organisational practice and requirements relating to own work area and uses this to improve outcomes

Main accountabilities

1.  To provide personal, social, emotional and physical care to clients including palliative care.

2.  Supervise social care workers during night shifts assigning routine tasks and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.

3.  Administer all medications in the home and provide first aid assistance to service users and staff when required.

4.  Ensure that the building is secure during out of hours working.

5.  Follow agreed standards and procedures as determined by the RNIB, CQC and other agencies.

6.  Chair handover meetings and care planning meetings to discuss the needs of service users and reach agreement regarding future care plans.

7.  Develop effective relationships with service users, families and colleagues.

8.  Complete daily logs and care plans relating to care delivered.

9.  Any other reasonable duties commensurate with the role.

10.  Adhere to all RNIB policies and procedures

Person specification

All criteria are essential unless otherwise stated.

1.  Specialist knowledge, skills and experience

1.1 Knowledge of the needs of older people.

1.2 QCF Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 2 or equivalent, prepared to and working towards achieving QCF Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 3 or equivalent, within 12 months.

1.3 Experience of working at a supervisory level in a care setting or ability to demonstrate your readiness to work at that level.

1.4 Knowledge of the CQC Fundamental standards of quality and safety and judgement framework.

1.5 Knowledge of the following:

·  Care practises with regard to older people.

·  Care standards legislation.

·  Legislation, regulations and good practise relating to residential care.

1.6 Ability to use Microsoft Office packages, such as Word, Excel, Outlook and the Internet.

Desirable

1.7 Experience of working with older people who have sight problems, are hearing impaired, or dual sensory loss.

2.  Team working

Experience of developing effective and supportive relationships with colleagues.

3.  Problem solving and creative skills

3.1 Experience of maintaining high professional standards and the ability to follow quality assurance systems.

3.2 Ability to remain calm and self controlled under pressure, reacting well to change and remaining positive despite setbacks.

4.1 Ability to be clear, concise and fluent in both written and oral communication, adapting style and content according to the recipient.

5.  Special conditions

5.1 This post is conditional to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Services Check for regulated activity

5.2 Prepared to participate in training and development events and meetings etc., which may be held in different parts of the country, in order to achieve RNIB objectives.

5.3 Prepared to cover staff absences in addition to working contracted hours.

5.4 Hours for this role are 36 per week. Shift working will be required which will include weekends and public holidays and some sleep in duties as well as on call.
